A long trip equals a lot of pics

A few years ago I did a tuna trip out of Westport. I was surprised to see US highway 12. Sure enough it is the same highway that goes through my hometown of Litchfield, MN. That put a road trip idea in my head. Well, things came together - I needed to visit family this year, I needed to show my family this van I have been going on and on about the last few years and it just so happened some classmates decided to have a 40 year reunion.

I didn't backtrack to Westport, but did drive 1400+ miles of hwy 12 from just west of Walla Walla to the Darwin Rod and Gun Club - the reunion location :). The return trip was a more southern route that I thought would give some good fishing opps. This map shows the main route.

This is the final trip odometer - actual miles was about 3788 as I put bigger tires and have not calibrated the odometer.

Before I got to 12, I made a stop to try to add a new species to the list. It took a while to find the target species, but I did see some sunfish and spent some time fishing for those to see if I could add a redear. No such luck, but it has been about 30 years since I held either one of these.

Day1 03.jpg

Finally found the target species and got an eat on the first cast. I guess I had a beat up leader and broke it off trying to keep it out of the weeds. Also broke off a PB SMB the same way - ugh. Didn't have another leader but finally found a fish (or 4) in more open water and didn't need to put the screws to it quite as hard. It was a good fish - about 27 inch fork length.

Day1 05.jpg

Got a late start to the day and spent a lot of time chasing capr so didn't get to my target destination before it was time to find a place to sleep. Ended up a couple miles up Smith Creek Rd.

Up early the next morning and fished the first good looking water I found on the Lochsa. Was fishing a dry and nothing was happening. I know nothing about this fishery so didn't spend too much time in that spot.

Was stopping at various pullouts to take pics as I worked my way upstream - beautiful river.

Day2 07.jpg

I went down a short river access road and parked thinking I would just take more pics. Got my first look at the water and turned around to retrieve a rod. Has to be fish in there!

Day2 09.JPG

Landed 5 cutts. Only took a pic of the first. Last one was a little bigger and actually put a good bend in the rod.

Day2 10.jpg

Fished a couple more spots but couldn't find any more fish willing to rise to a dry. I either suck at fishing the fast pocket water or it doesn't hold fish in this river.

On to Montana. I have only fishing in MT one time - Glacier NP. I didn't plan any stops. Just figured I would wing it. When I saw signs for Rock Creek, I figured I had to stop. Drove up a ways before I stopped to fish. Saw these sheep along the way.

Day2 16.jpg

Most access points had vehicles in them. Finally stopped at a rather shallow fast section but did manage a couple micro browns and a small bow from various pockets behind rocks and along the bank. Definitely the smallest brown I have ever caught.

Day2 17.jpg

On to Helena

Day2 22.jpg

and some very lonely areas in eastern MT. Biggest herd of elk I have ever seen - counted around 140 - just west of Spring Creek campground.

Day2 24.jpg

By the time I got there it was pretty late. I did see a bull moose on the drive in but he spooked right away.

Looked around a bit past the campground in the morning before heading back out. It was a nice area. Saw this just off the road. Not sure what kind of critter it was

Day3 02.jpg

Some interesting rock formations on the road out.

Day3 03.jpg

Stopped to say hi to these guys just before getting back on Hwy 12.

Day3 05.jpg

Thanks MT for posting fishing access signs. I stopped at Selkirk on the Musselshell but the storms that rolled through the night before had it high and milky. Only made a couple casts.

This one, on the other hand occupied a good bit of my time. 2 more caprs!

As expected I found the pic per post limit!

A couple more eastern MT hwy 12 pics before taking a detour north from Bowman, ND (god's country they claim) to Teddy Roosevelt NP.

I have a bit of a soft spot for TRNP. I was born in Dickinson and it was my first park. One of my most memorable Oh Shit moments was when I (a bulletproof 19 year old) decided to get a better background for a shot of a big bull bison. He ended up being almost between me and the car when he started pawing the ground. I thought I was toast. Turns out he was just softening up the ground to roll around it in. I carefully made my way back to my very nervous dad and grandpa without taking anymore pics. A bunch from this visit.

Up early the next morning to watch the bison - they are just soooo cool. Such a tragedy.

They like to roll in the dirt - you can see that one did here before others walked through.

I didn't take any pics, but I will say that Cottonwood Campground is actually pretty nice.

The 500 or so miles from the park to Litchfield is not recommended.

As you might expect, the reunion sucked. Good to see my family tho. I will add the return trip soon.

That looks so bad ass

Now THAT is a road trip!

Great TR, thanks.

What's up with that ground squirrel? What a porker! And I love the following sunset/sunrise pic.

Alright. Return trip.

Snapped this with my phone out the window as I drove through downtown Litchfield, MN at 6:30 AM. Never too much happening, but really quiet at that hour.

Day9 02.jpg

You see a lot of abandon houses driving through rural America. This one west of Watertown, SD has a higher window to wall ratio than any I have ever seen - not even close.

Day9 05.jpg

This is what happens when it gets really windy in South Dakota. I should have tried to find a road that would get me closer to see the carnage. Just snapped this out the window going 65 mph.

Link to story: 130 mph straight line winds

This is traffic in South Dakota.

Day9 09.jpg

I hit Pierre around lunch time. I ate in the capital parking lot. After I finished eating I decided to see what it was like inside. I was shocked by how much freedom you have to roam around inside. They actually gave me a self guided tour book after I cleared security. Unfortunately there was a lot of restoration work going on in the dome area.

Day9 21.jpg

My camping spot for the night was Badlands NP. Google sent me down a gravel road north of it - was trying to avoid the 80 mph interstate. Was a bit surprised to see this place just north of the park. Didn't spend a bunch of time inside, but if you are in the area, it is worth a visit. I didn't make it to Wall Drug, however.

Day9 23.jpg

Are we approaching this reality???

Day9 24.jpg

On to the park. These two images are not the highest quality, but show just how enormous bison are.

Physical Dimensions
    • Height: 5.5 to 6.5 feet (1.7 to 2.0 meters) tall at the top of the shoulder hump.
    • Length: 9 to 12.5 feet (2.7 to 3.8 meters) from nose to tail.
    • Weight: 1,800 to 2,400 pounds (816 to 1,088 kilograms), with rare exceptionally large wood bison bulls exceeding 2,400 pounds.
Note the prairie dog in the foreground.

Day9 32.jpg

I can't decide if this is an adult female pronghorn or a baby. It just looked tiny as it ran by.

Day9 38.jpg

The bison herd at Badlands is quite a bit larger than TRNP. This image shows a small fraction of what was in front of me.

Day9 39.jpg

I would say Badlands is quite a bit more scenic than TRNP. TRNP certainly felt more intimate tho.

Day9 41.jpg

I took this shot from the van. I don't think this thing moved for 10 minutes. It just sat there watching the sunset with people 20 feet away.

Day9 44.jpg

There were people just outside the frame to the left.

Day9 46.jpg

The campground (Cedar Pass) doesn't provide much privacy. I didn't make it to Sage Creek CG, but it can't be worse. Just not many trees in the park so this is what you get.
