Those USGS topogs are great! You can spend hours with a single quadrangle. Back in the 70's a friend and I bought about 150 of them directly from the feds for about 35 cents each.
 
It is interesting to compare the old maps to todays map of the same area. My son has discovered roads that were on the old maps and not on todays maps make for interesting hikes. He looks for ones where there are no distinct trails. Rusty vehicles and abandoned logging equipment are some of his finds.
