3 Days on the Yak!

Left last Saturday morning running a little late but met my friend Abe and her boyfriend at Reds at 1030am. Fished Roza and worked back up towards Reds. They just came out for the day!

Slept in the car Saturday night at Umptanum, couldn't get a site so just stayed in the regular parking lot.

Met some nice people, particularly Hesther who was teaching herself how to fish. Ran her through some basics, she had a spinning rod with a Wooley Bugger type jig on it!

Day 2 - floated Uptanum to Big Pine with 4 guys from a FB group I'm on. All new friends, and are like long lost brothers! Slow day, I didn't catch anything other than cigars and a buzz but loved floating the river and fished dries on one of my bamboo rods, nymphed a ton on my 6wt and threw streamers! Swing big streamers on my 12'7" Buelah 7/8 when we stopped.

Today I slept in, for me, and met Tim Harris (from WFF.com) at Reds in the morning. Cast a new Winston 8wt with a bonefish line and it rocked!

He picked up a awesome 3wt T&T 10'9" Euro nymph rod. It feels like a 3wt even with the length!

Tim and I fished until 230pm or so at spots up to Ringer and then headed home. I've known him for years and this was the first time we've fished together! There will be more!

Fishing was tough, we threw everything at them. I was skunked but had a blast and will be out again next month! In our float on Sunday, Nate got a dink and a standard 12" Yak fish. Guides told us it was slow for everyone. Still awesome and the company and weather was amazing!

I mentioned this site to everyone new and old I met! Need more stickers so I can hand them out! Thanks @Evan B , @Josh and @Billy !!

Putting one on my car today as well!
Cheers!

Three days, no fish? Ouch. How many anglers fishing your stretches of river? Better luck next time.

It was a normal weekend, maybe a little quieter than normal. In the Sunday group, all of us had guide friends and noboby was doing well. On the Thursday before and previously fishing had been good! Stopped in Reds a few times, talked with Bo and some of the other guides.. fishing was slow everywhere!

We threw everything except M80s and powerbait at them. I think I only saw 3 risers in the stretch from Umptanum to Big Pine. Water clarity was good and the water was a little cloudy on Sunday's float. Saw a few bugs, one hatch with bird going crazy at the rock wall below Pacman. I started off nymphing and did that or streamer most of the time. Threw streamer a long and did cast dries at the shallow areas. Fish just didn't want to play. Monday Tim nymphed stretches hard, and I chilled. If something was there he should have caught at least a dink or two. Finished at Ringer and no one wanted to play either.. I'll be back in May, end of May most likely and it should be fine.

@Justin Whitlock said its been super tough on his recent trips. Apparently had his first ever Yak skunking one day, which is how every other guide he talked to did.

I remember when I followed Yakima stuff closer with a few guide buddies back in the day they often complained about April. There is a definite lull between skwala madness and Mothers Day from what they lamented.

Ouch… At least you got to enjoy the canyon! Most fisherman won’t post days of getting skunked ( I tend to be one of them 😂) I dig your style. Thanks for sharing!

Pliny the Elder is the damn Holy Grail of IPA!!!! Where the hell did you get that???
Friends in low places, that go down to CA and bring me a few back every once in a while! Actually Russian River Brewing has increased production so maybe sometime in the future we'll see it up here. I will head down to Russian River and try some of the other beers, maybe plan a trip when Pliny the Younger comes out!

I wouldn't normally, but I really haven't done much fishing in the past 5 years, not like I used to. Plus it really was a fantastic trip! The couple I fished with day 1, she was a friend from my Total Wine days, and I got to meet her boyfriend who was into flyfishing and a very nice guy! I have offered to take many of my coworkers and non fishing friends fishing and few commit to it.. it's either too early, to far or they're too busy! So this was fun for me and I spent my time making sure they were learning and having fun! I did fish a bit, but not hard.

Day 2 I floated with 4 new guys, I joined a Facebook group "PNW Spey Finatics" and fishing with new guys can always be interesting.. these guys are cool and they know how to fish! They're were I was when I really got hooked on fishing and fly fishing. Or fly fishing at least, most were steelhead guys that have caught a ton on gear, but got into fly fishing for the same reasons most of us are here!

One guy, Dustin, sounded and looked a little like Matthew McConaughey and laughed like him too. "All right, all right!" . He rowed us in his boat!
Nate PK the founder of the group and organizer of the FB was awesome and had the other boat a beautiful raft with a fishing frame. It was an Aire, I don't recall the model. He is passionate about fly fishing and more so on conservation. We have a lot in common and I don't believe anyone is/was on WFF.com or here. They may join as I mentioned this site to all of them. I will fish with these guys again, they were just fun and knew their shit, but not about the Yakima. They loved the fact that I've been fishing so long on the Yak and picked my brain (what's left of it! HA!)..

We fished hard and between the 5 of us, Nate got two fish. I was skunked,, but it didn't matter as it was a great day on the river with great new friends! Plus I always catch a release a few cigars and recycle the beer and whisk(e)y!! All right, all right! Camping was fun and simple and I needed the peace and quiet!

Day 3 almost didn't happen, My friend Tim mentioned in a FB post that he was coming over to pick up a new rod at Red's Monday morning. When I sent him a note and asked what time he was coming over, he said at 8am when they opened. I suggested we meet at Reds then and fish a bit depending on how much time he had, so ended up staying over Sunday night. He fished hard, and I watched him work the first section we fished with his new setup! Got some cool shots and thought he was going to slay them! Nothing came out to play! We stopped a few place on out way out of the canyon, finishing at Ringer and nothing there either, for him or I!

While the catching sucked, the fishing and company was awesome! I met new people who were like long lost brothers to me on Sunday and will fish with them in the future! Saw old friends and met some great people on the river and in the campground! Shared wine and beer with strangers.. and got to watch some crazy ultra marathoners both Saturday and Sunday! That doesn't suck!

Cheers!
Bill

I don’t mean to be crass, but that corn dog in the foreground. Sure made me wonder. I mean, like, it’s so “there.” As in “right there.”

I have fished the Yak for years and had great days and bad days. I've been on guided trips when you couldn't buy a fish!

Kudos to you for ignoring the voices that inevitably start toward the afternoon of a slow patch: You know, for all the time you've put in on this water you're not a very good fisherman...

I have to remind myself to ignore that liar, and focus on how fortunate I am to be able to float and fish in such a beautiful area! Memo to self: It's the fishing, stupid; not the catching!

I am leaving momentarily for a days fishing on the yak with my family. I leave a drift boat at Reds. More to follow.
Yesterday's trip to the Yak was typical as for fishing. My son in law outfished me as he did the last time we we fished together. The last time was over a year ago in the Yellowstone River and he caught a 26" Cutthroat . Buzzy was kind enough to post a photo on the other site. On this trip Ryan(aka son in law) landed a 16 inch rainbow and lost one far better. Sorry no photos. My grand son was in my lap and I do have photo's of him and at 3 years old he is far bigger than both fish put together. I missed two wimpy tugs that were typical for me. Weather was very agreeable and the cloud of caddis flies made "matching the hatch relatively easy.
