Thanks Capt! I don't eat kale but the wife and chickens do. We will be planting garlic soon, we keep planting lettuce and radishes. We may try and keep the cold box going, as it is on the south side of the house.

We are in a weird micro climate, in s small valley... so 8a and 8b.

We have to get the apples sauced and canned!

The sad part is the hops got to heavy during a big wind and rain a few weeks ago... sad...

This year was my first season gardening in Seattle. A lot different from the hot climate I was used to down South. The humidity poses some challenges for the intensive planting I did in the past. I learned a lot. Got some tomatoes, peppers, onions and spuds and my Cactus bloomed. I’ll have to do some research concerning a winter garden, particularly in the raised beds.2D8126D7-2876-46A4-BD56-AEB7A2910857.jpeg

I’m kind of tomatoed out as a I’ve been eating multiples per day since late July. With temps in the low 40’s and rain coming Thursday, I pulled the plug yesterday. Most of these are going to my neighbors that expressed interest in letting them ripen inside. It was a good year.

Favorites: my Great Red, Black Prince,Black SeaMan, Black from Tula-large ones- Giant Belgian , Cherokee purple for champion of the year and flavor(for me)
If you start from seed I can send you seed of Great Red which I brought back from the USSR in 1991. The others can be found from online sources..It does helpto buy seed in your NW region and approximate climate zone, meaning Pine Tree in maine is a good source or Territorial Seed

Might have to arm wrestle you ;) for that piece of @Shawn Seeger 's strawberry rhubarb pie (my favorite pie). Well done, Shawn!
My favorite pie, too. Usually a neighbor brings over rhubarb from her garden and I buy strawberries from the little family farm a 1/2 mile from me. Making rhubarb/strawberry jam w/o sugar for my toast for breakfast. Nomnom!

I invent recipes intuitively with good results usually. Once in awhile that does not happen. I had a bunch of Japanese cucumbers and we had eaten them fresh all summer and gifted alot to 5-6 neighbors as well as tomatoes and trombocini squash . So i canned about 30 quarts of pickles and mixtures. All great, some curried. I decided to can something different using cukes and found a British cucumber relish. I followed the recipe to a tee.
Hard to describe the favor after a week of curing after canning. It tasted sort of like marmite minus the saltiness. I-have tried Marmite and hate that stuff. Tried a tsp and the flavor on my palette just wouldn’t go away… tongue scraping and mouth wash rinsing helped but it lingered for hours.IMG_8049.jpeg
