NFR 2025 Gardening Growing Thread

Non-fishing related
Yeah overdue starting a new thread. Not much news other than i have dug up all our begonia bulb and put in the greenhouse . Raked swept the balance of leaves . Digging another yard of my compost tomorrow and planning greenhouse starting dates . Still have a lot of parsley and oregano growing and shallots , winter stuff all growing swiftly. Favas and biennial broccoli from Sept planting about 30” tall. Temps very very mild . Lowest temp here so far since winter began is about 38-40 degrees. Garlic is taller than usual for January. Narcissus , and other bulbs on there way. Have made a soil amendment list. Will get it in the ground/ raised beds in the next month- 50 lbs cottonseed meal, 25lbs kelp meal, 12 lbs bonemeal , some worm castings(12. Lg bags) maybe ght grab 30 lbs of alfafa pellets. Happy gardening!

Only way I can deal with a plant is to figure AHH WHAT THE HELL. Only way to throw a plant in the dirt is to just figure AH WHAT THE HELL. AH WHAT THE HELL just throw it in the dirt. Who cares!!! Figured AH WHAT THE HELL threw another bush in the yard.
The ah what the hell method is great until success and pride kicks into overdrive. Then your partner in life becomes a gardening widow, and the discussions begin.

Blossom end rot. Do not over head water- no sprinklers- calcium deficiency - remove fruit and brown rot evidence. Do not put in compost and reintroduce spores
thx. will see what i can do about the sprinkling. the tomatoes are in an enclosed above ground area, with irrigation. and will pull those bad boys out of the compost pile.... ugh

As the Capt. says, it’s linked to calcium deficiency or the wrong balance of nitrogen and calcium in the soil (too much nitrogen for the amount of calcium). Watering too much can leach out all the soluble calcium in your soil and lead to end rot.

There are calcium sprays that you can use to give the plants a short term boost to stop blossom end rot. Science says that it shouldn’t work as the calcium is not absorbed by the leaves, but it has for me in the past. Any commercial tomato specific fertilizer should have enough calcium to stop it for the rest of the season. Ground up eggshells, Dolomite lime or other calcium source will help long term.

Late fall and late winter lime application, humic acid dilution application in late march or mid April. I use a low nitrogen about 5-4-3.5 granular organic fertilzer , no manure, worm castings. eggshells soaking in water buckets. Alfafa feed pellets in soil watered in. Always quick to clean up late season tomato plants toavoid fungus growth. So many organic approaches tothe calcium issue. I-hand water with a 3 gallon bucket. Lots of buckets to make elixir's , eggshell old spent coffee grounds watered down.

Yes i also do that as well
I made a dillution this morning1Tb
Langbeinite, 2 Tb humic acid powder and 2 Tb of a complete granular organic fertilizer (True)in a 5 gallon bucket fill with water mix and use for watering a dozen tomatoes by pouring off and diluting the divided elixer to create 4 large buckets full( using another 3 gallon bucket) This is my dosing process to adjust ph and avoid blossom end rot. That and pruning suckers to maintain air flow
