2023 Skagit/Sauk season is a go

I would like to tag along one day if anyone is open to it. I'm not a Steelheader so I don't know much about it. I've never rowed a boat on moving water, never landed a Steelhead and only have single handed rods. I just think it would be cool to see one in person don't really care if I catch it. I can bring the beer and you could drink it because I don't drink. I could also take you out for salmon in the summer.

Yes I am well aware. I was mostly joking. But still, does America really have to be hard on guy who takes a day off to fish the Skagit during the legendary steelhead season? I mean it’s kinda fucked up that we have that knee jerk reaction. I hope everyone catches a 15 pound hen and gets to handle it and make that memory on their day off, skipping work, skipping class, whatever.
 
April 9th 2003, I was pissed off at my boss for a week or more so I played hooky and went up to the Sauk. Landed my first Sauk winter run, a snow belly hen all of 13-14lbs.
Next day asked my boss if he wanted to talk about it and he said no. So I gave him my 2 week notice, I planned on selling my house and everything I owned except my fishing and skiing gear and move up to Skeena country and try and find a Canadian gall to shack up with.
2 days before my last day they made me an offer to stay...

Unfortunately I took the offer and started dating my ex wife months later, second biggest mistake I made that year 🤬

Damn, women and steelhead can be so hit and miss. Some days they are all over you and others you wish you had never started the charade to begin with

True nuf . .. . when I'm doing well with 1, I'm rarely doing well with the other. Had some awesome Steelheading when I was single. Given the state of Steelheading these days, I should probably stay hitched. :cautious:
 
Seems like omerta is the rule except when it comes to ManBearPig/tweaker/break-in/100%-fatal-river-hazard-every100-yard info on these fisheries, but can anyone post or PM a link where I can find an official source declaring the end date for the season? I've seen both 4/13 and 4/30 posted but couldn't find anything definitive whilst doing some very determined but clearly inept Googling.
 
I got an email from the district biologist the other day. No official word other than there will be a CNR season. The reason: NMFS had a public comment period for the revised RMP to Jan. 23. Comment period is closed; now NMFS will review comments and officially approve the new RMP when they get it done. Which is unlikely to be Jan. 31. In which case, as I presently understand it, the Skagit closes Jan. 31 and reopens when WDFW gets the word from NMFS. After years and years of rehearsing clusterfvcks, it is apparently too much to expect that they might have figured out how to do one thing in timely fashion by now. I can't even go pester them in person now. They closed the old office during the pandemic and moved somewhere, not that it matters since most everybody works from home now, so it's nigh on impossible to find the people who are doing the work unless one happens to have their cell phone number. Fvck!

Thanks for the update. Great news for anglers that at least there will be a season. This is really all we can ask for and so I want to express my appreciation for those who have helped get us where we are. Re-thinking my statement above, I suppose we can also ask for government processes that work, are timely, and efficient, but then that is just plain crazy thinking.

Was told yesterday on the river by a wdfw individual that an official announcement "should come later this week."

Nooksack system closed, Skagit system closed……This is when I usually head to BC but I’ll wait another week before I seriously consider my first license in a few years up there.
