2022 Garden Thread

When i was a little kid c. 1956-58 i was playing in our tiny front yard with Buster my dog . I saw on the ground some pill bugs and picked one up and reached up to the top post of the 4’ cyclone fence post and carefully put the rolly polly on the fence cap, craning my head back and up mouth open in the effort to reach that high the little thing rolled up and fell right in my mouth! Shocked and startled i bit down… one of the few things i remember vividly from when i was 3-5 years old. I can still taste it. Like not being able to swallow a mouthful of those old red oneaday vitamins….SuperMetallicGRoSSness!!!B8DE4F6D-5232-4350-AF75-BA9E17D6561D.jpeg

Why ?

Lots to plant, even if its cool and rainy.
Plenty of season left, so get going and plant.
Soil temps are around 60, so seedes germinate fast.
If they dont rot first...
:ROFLMAO:

Putting in 30 brussels sprouts and a handful of broccoli tommorow, probable seed carrots and parsnips too.
Never give up...
;)

Plant them with a pinch of desiccant…;)

Epic for cool weather crops planted last fall but harvest has been delayed due to not enough seasonal change thus far… my 19 tomato plants are slow to take off and snails are partying but not without peril as i applied diatomaceous earth ( a lot) over the past 6 weeks only to have to resort to Sluggo that seems to be working as perforation and chewed young pepper leaves get supplanted by new ones. Hopefully this cycle will right itself. Tomorrow the projection shows mild rainless days with sun that may just be timely. Hey we can complain about the gardening weather or just adapt.

Can any of you tell me what’s getting at my mint plants? No sign of any bugs…92D694D6-1243-44CD-909C-A6554F0B65A9.jpeg

Doy white oil for caterpillars is more specific than neem which can kill some beneficial insects that do not chew on your plants… just a thought
I only spray cole crops or roses. Or for that matter green leafy veg. So the culprits that are effected being soft bodied larva and insects are suffocated with oil and dish soap and water. It is far more selective based on what those insects are attracted to here in our garden.I know what i am treating before i spray and that is of paramount importance. Neem oil is a toxic horticultural oil and having used it years ago as well as bt i learned a simple diy non toxic white oil can kill beneficial soft bodied insects that respirate through their body membrane if you spray the leaves of a plant they frequent. However I spend 4 hours on average daily in the garden and observe insect activity. Timing is very important. Early or late in the day for reasons I don’t believe i need to explain .
