Add some smoked pimenton to this recipe and you have the best sh!t ever...

Should I cut the growing tips off all my squash vines, cantelope, and tomatoes to get the fruit that has set to ripen faster before winter? At this point I just want a few of each variety.

What kind of squash ?
Summer has a ways to go here, so don't be in a big rush...

Oregon sweet meat, I have a few that are golf ball sized. Cantelope is sweet granite, an early maturing variety also a few fruits that are golf ball sized. Didn't expect anything with how late I planted but if I can get just a few across the finish line I'll be happy.

Yeah for winter squash i would cut off all flowers for sure, but not leaves.
Too late is too late for some plants, but you never know...although golf ball sized is a bit small in September I would think.

Get it down to 1 squash at this point, and pray a lot.

Lol

I would not ut hollow stemmed vines to speed up anything. I topped my tomatoes 2 weeks ago. Mid month i will root prune which is a simple process the roots are a circumference below the soil 6-8””. I just glab a bread knife and saw a straight path about 3-4” away from center stock. Does not kill the plant just freaks it out a bit. Been doing this for 35 years. I used to wait longer… but I have more winter stuff to put in.

Only thing produced so far this year, I hear these are edible. So at least I'm good at growing "flowers"
I love me some squash blossoms. Stuffed with farmer’s cheese or we’ll drained ricotta and some garlic/fresh herbs and pan fried or just chopped up in quesadillas. I recall reading a recipe from Rick Bayless for a squash blossom soup years ago but never tried making it. Thanks for the reminder, I need to get a few before it’s too late.

A question for the tomato gurus here. Why do some (a high percentage) of my tomatoes split about a day after picking them? I never had this issue with the tomatoes we grew in FL but it is prevalent for me here in WA.

Could you be overwatering?

Once my tomatoes get close to ripening, I more or less stop watering.

That's odd that's its a delayed reaction, I have had trouble with cherry varieties splitting after picking them but it seems to be from disturbing/weakening in the stem area as most of the splits were ones that I picked without the stem still on.

Overwatering or inconsistent moisture are the common causes of splitting.

I have 17 remaining tomato plants . Production this year lousy. Still a few dozen or so on remaining plants. Right now it is about peppers and rattlesnake beans. This past late spring I had 3 failures of planting my favorite pole bean- gold marie(yellow romano type heirloom) dowgauk is hatching currently - always start in mid June for end of season harvest because they need 75 deg soil-ish. Anyway here are pepper plants doin their usual lTe season thing. I have adapted to this less than ideal sun exposure and after 4 years with Jeanne here in town i am figuring it out.D0536987-511B-4402-8E66-A9DB382E5544.jpegA2703DBB-DD21-45DA-BEA0-FE1B24BBC305.jpeg

Is it possible to type below each photo to id each image? I saw no way to attach a comment on them once posted through the edit function
