$100 Million for One Square Mile: Deal to Protect Land in Grand Tetons

After years of negotiations and threats of development, Wyoming will sell a prized piece of land so that it can be preserved inside Grand Teton National Park.

I have been to that area of the park several times. Some great views while hiking to good fishing.

Finally, WY does the right thing!
 
I admire the action but am frankly irritated at the state basically using blackmail to get the feds to pay this exorbitant sum. Legal, but scummy. That's where we're at in this day and age.

So, their stated reason was because that plot was not producing the amount they wanted it to for education (the original reason for those land grants. Like how WA's sell timber for local school funds.)

This, however, appeared at the very end of an article in the local paper Cowboy State Daily:

"The State Board of Land and Investments, which is made up by the same members as the state land board, also ruled in November that proceeds from the Kelly Parcel sale shall be used for the potential purchase of federal lands identified in the Powder River Basin for mineral production."

So, ya know. Follow the $$.
 
...even worse...the upcoming administration will doubtless be happy to sell off public land.
 
$100 million for a square mile? I congratulate Wyoming for maximizing the profit for their taxpayers. It's a fools errand for the US government to pay that kind of money for a square mile of land. Well at least it didn't end up in the hands of another fucking elite billionaire liberal.

It was not the state's goodness or generosity, it was the state's greed. Let's not conflate this into a noble act.
