    What's Catching You Fish?

Carved out an extra day to fish on a work trip in central Idaho. Took the 5wt and a small box of dries looking for cutthroat and had this chunky bull trout eat a chubby while it was skating over a deep pool.

A Noob's First Time Chasing Tuna

For Ocean Trips I do the best with the Non-drowsy Dramamine but I think the dosage recommendations aren’t accurate. I load up 2x what the package says when I wake up and am good to go.

Fish Species That Defy the Fly

How about Peamouth? This one got tangled up on an intruder and the 14’ 9 weight may be a little overpowered.

    Furthest Travel to Fish

In a car did a spontaneous road trip to BC a few years ago and had a 14 hour solo drive from Idaho to Sacramento to make work the next day. Flew redeye California to New York, then to Johannesburg, then a small flight to Mossel Bay, South Africa to look at the great whites.

    Wading boots suggestions?

A little background I’m fairly tall and have always hated wearing boots. If I go hiking I will choose running shoes over any sort of hiking boot. The flyweight style has been good for me. I just retired a pair of Simms Flyweights I picked up in 2022. I started them off wet wading but quickly...

    Consolidating battery/electrical system

Oh ya that helps explain what’s happening. Do you think you will alternate the big motor more to make sure the solo battery charges?

    Consolidating battery/electrical system

On boats freshwater boats I used to run (90hp+ outboards) the electronics were wired so the motor only charged the cranking battery, and there was a second battery for electronics. The second battery would run down through normal use each day and need to be charged at home. Were you putting...

    Pyram!d Lake Tips?

If you are trying to avoid the crowds the rocky points are some of the most crowded areas of the lake in the spring. And if you google most popular beaches to fish and drive around the shoreline you will see these are all wall to wall with people in spring. There are plenty of less crowded...

A couple '26 goals: fish new spots and catch new species - Pyramid Lake

It sounds like you moved to several spots during each day? A lot of the regulars don’t move at all during the day and grind out the slow periods, with the idea that they are fishing when the fish move through not driving.

A couple '26 goals: fish new spots and catch new species - Pyramid Lake

That’s a great trip, especially in those conditions! Winter storms really turn the bite on as long as you can still fish in the waves.

What was your moment that inspired your transition to flyfishing?

I grew up in Sacramento and we used to take day trips to the mountains to fly fish for trout as a kid. Then it turned into fly fishing the American River for steelhead and shad with an old 6 weight. One of the things about living near warm water lakes is there’s always bass to catch, and I...

    What fish is this?

I agree every time I see this posted my first thought is “half-pounder”.

Echo Swing for NorCal - S. OR rivers?

Another vote for getting a shorter 7weight since you already like your short 6 weight. Echo also makes the compact Spey which are 12’ but definitely feel short. I started with the 7130 when I lived in NorCal but wouldn’t recommend a 13’ to someone not sold on the length.

    Skagit Steelhead CnR 2026

Checked the river out yesterday and there was traffic control on Hwy 530 between Darrington and Rockport. Saw a couple jets on the middle Skagit so they were getting in somewhere. Always nice when your line goes tight.

Annual favorite fish of the year thread.

Mine was my first S-River steelhead on a 2 handed rod. This was the first green water we had after a few low/clear/snowy weeks. First stop of the morning and about halfway down I came tight to this beautiful chrome and white fish.

    Puget Sound

I work downtown and will go off the piers after work if the evenings are nice. There is a surprising nuance to squid jigging and it’s always humbling when you are standing shoulder to shoulder with other people and they are pulling squid out when you aren’t. I have a UV light that I use to patch...

    What's Catching You Fish?

First trip out on a rainy day this season which was a welcome change from the last few trips. Coho continue to allude me this year so I switched to fishing wood for cutthroat to end the day. Landed a few smaller fish and was ready to call it a day when I tight roped onto the log jam to get one...

Does salmon spawning affect the trout fishing in creeks?

On your next trip out you could try fishing the main river where you will see similar masses of humpies close to shore and in shallow water. There are bull trout, rainbows, and cutts that will also be shallow. Not in high density like others have said, but certainly enough to make the day fun.

    Commander SUP? Why not?

There really aren’t a lot of advantages the SUP offers versus a kayak of other than I already have a paddleboard and am not getting anything else yet. For pink salmon fishing at Lincoln Park you could stay inside the cove where the currents and boat traffic wasn’t bad, but still be far enough...
