Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

Mark, I'm getting tired of focusing on this negativity between us, and I think we both have better things to be doing. If you want to complain about my favorite fly rod, the Winston Alpha+ 8wt, then please be my guest to do it on YouTube, Facebook, this forum, and from the Juneau Costco. At the...

Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

I respect your take on the OHS and I agree with the versatility. What lines are you using with it? I liked it a lot more for overhead casting than roll casting, even when I added a haul. Unfortunately, I don't have enough back casting room on the local creeks.

Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

Mr. H, Believe it or not, we’ve actually interacted and crossed paths before. I must say, you’re much nicer in real life than in this forum. As a 4th generation Alaskan, I really appreciate everything you’ve done for salmon and trout in SE AK. I’d be stoked if I had even half of your success...

Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

It appears I ruffled the feathers of a diehard OHS fanatic. I'm happy to hear you like the rod and that it serves you well. Rather than just disrespectfully make jabs at me, I challenge you to take your own swing at detailed OHS gear review and best me. Who knows? Maybe you'll reveal your OHS...

Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

I took some time to think about your constructive criticism, and all I can say is "they can't all be zingers". I made a few additions to further explain my opinionated review. You're right about the 4" difference of the OHS, but I can do almost everything more pleasantly with just a 10 footer...

Gear Review Echo 8wt OHS Review: Old, but Still Reliable

Disclaimer: The following review of the Echo 8wt OHS has some critiques of the rod. I've realized there are a lot of loyal OHS fans on this forum, and I'll admit the rod is an acquired taste that works great for the people who cherish it. If you disagree with my opinion and experience, then I...

Gear Review Sagebrush Dry Sure-Dry Hip Pack Review: Alaska Tested & Approved

The best part of my job is the level of creativity and craftsmanship I get to use everyday. The 2nd best part is seeing places in Alaska that are too expensive to visit on my own dime. That’s how I was given the opportunity to meet the owner of Sagebrush Dry in Kake, Alaska in 2023. Then a month...

    Euro curious... on a budget.

I had a 4wt Echo Shadow II, and that was my first step into Euro nymphing. In my opinion, the four weight model was too heavy. I had to use the older style lampson liquid 5 weight to balance it out somewhat, and even that didn't do the trick until I bought the competition kit that had the extra...

Gear Review TFO Blitz 6wt Review: Tested by Coastal Cutthroat... and More!

Why the TFO Blitz in a 6wt: Long story short, the color and hardware pulled me in. I just had a good feeling about it the minute I saw a picture on TFO’s site. I moved a couple years ago and now I’m surrounded by coastal cutthroat here in Alaska. A 7wt was too big for it to be fun and a 5wt...
