Is it worth eating river pinks?

Sometimes hooking those rare big buck humpies (6-8 pound class) in the salt remind me of fighting a king. They just completely wipe you out.

    2025: A Fantastic Pink Year?

I think North Sound pinks could still be pretty good. The 2023 run got hit hard by flooding in Nov. 2021 if I remember correctly, but it seemed like the 2023 run was a bit larger than 2021 in the S-rivers. A big question I have is if the possible low return of Hood Canal coho will impact...

    Non-Fly Bank Sockeye?

Years ago when Lake Washington had good runs they would occasionally swim by a few beaches that come to mind in fairly sizable schools. They behave pretty similar to humpies in the salt. I threw the kitchen sink at them but never connected. I also met an old timer who told me he hooked about a...

    Music on the water

My fishing music is the birds. Gulls in the saltwater, songbirds along the river (especially in the first and last hours of daylight).

    RIP Jimmy

https://www.flyfisherman.com/editorial/fly-angler-jimmy-carter-passes/469372 This is a good read. I find it really inspiring how he stayed active well into his 80s and 90s. It also seems like he had a curiosity to keep on picking up and learning new things, which is seen in this article that...

    Old Steelhead Reports

I’ve tried winter steelhead fishing mostly with gear the past 5 years and haven’t caught shit. I go out about 10-15 times a winter too. I’m kinda envious that I’ve never gotten the opportunity to fish for them in decent, catchable numbers. I guess I was born too late.

    Banks Lake Steelhead Plant

Would these fish they are releasing even grow into decent size (like in the 16” + range)? Because when they released them about 7-8 years ago, I remember most of them got harvested pretty quickly as WDFW mainly stocked them in put & take fisheries and upped the daily limit to 10. I don’t recall...

    College Football 2024

I don’t think it will unless they run into a game where they lose the turnover margin by a lot. Gotta also remember that the two times Oregon blew their chance was against a great Auburn team led by Cam Newton and that Ohio State team that got carried by Ezekiel Elliot. This year, I don’t see...

    College Football 2024

I’m a Huskies fan and really hate to say this but unless something crazy happens, Oregon is gonna win the whole thing this year. I don’t see another team out there that will stop them.

Advice on finding quality fishing partners

I’ve never had a consistent fishing partner or buddy before outside of family or taking a friend out once every few years or so. But I do have a lot of fishing acquaintances that I’ve known for years. There’s one Puget Sound beach I fish multiple times a week each summer where it feels like...

    Carkeek Chums

https://westseattleblog.com/2024/11/surprise-second-wave-of-salmon-spawners-breaks-fauntleroy-creek-record/ Thought this would be cool to share.

    Puget Sound

How big do chum get on average? I caught a hen today that was 8lbs, which seems cookie cutter size. However, I have seen a few bucks easily in the high teens in the past. Do bucks usually have a few pounds on hens?

    Cutty time

I caught a plump sea-run as bycatch while coho fishing (with gear) in a Puget Sound river this weekend. Was a pleasant surprise. So it may not be time for you guys to hang it up for the season quite yet!

    Carkeek Chums

There’s also another creek down there by Meadowdale that got a return of chum when I swung by there around 10 years ago. It’s along that trail that goes down to the beach and under the train tracks. I wonder if they still show up there.

WDFW to end two early winter hatchery steelhead (chambers creek) programs

Sad that we may lose this fishery. I can personally confirm that Tokul still has some years that produce fish in catchable numbers, even though of course it is a fraction of what it used to be due to the reduced plants. The survival rate there is definitely higher than at Reiter or Whitehorse...

    What's Catching You Fish?

My lucky tan Hippy Stompers have got it done in the blue lines all summer for trout of all colors.

    College Football 2024

I think the Huskies will have a solid year despite all the pieces they lost. It’s early but Jonah Coleman looks like a really good running back, one that we haven’t seen in Montlake for a long time.

    Non-Fly Dirtbag river Coho '24'

Already heard of some chromers being seen in the rivers. Even when I get completely teased by lockjaw coho there are very few things better than breathing in the crisp October air on the river and coming home to watch football.

Will we be Fishing For Salmon in Ten Years?

Not expecting much (if any) opportunity in terms steelhead and kings (outside of people fighting over what we have left just like we are experiencing now). But I do think that coho will still be here in decent numbers and pinks are appearing to be the climate change winner. It really depends if...

    Puget Sound

Rule of thumb is that Ocean runs don’t show up in the Sound in good numbers until Labor Day weekend, give or take a week. I would expect that to be the case this year. We just gotta cross our fingers for cooler weather and rain.
