    Salmon rod weight

I agree, a 6 wt is on the light side for coho (and definitely too light for chinook), but fine, with a few caveats: If not keeping fish, I would make sure I didn't "play them to death", meaning ; if they run too far downstream, break them off, rather than winching them all the way back up, only...

On the plus side of getting older: A lifetime supply of anything doesn't need to be all that much stuff.

Coho from the beach fly suggestions

I use a Snowbee XS switch line with a 5' clear int sink tip, with 5' fluoro tippet. The 31' head has a more delicate tip than most "beach lines" Ive seen..which are designed to turn over bulkier flies. Ive gone away from using a switch rod on the beach, as I (and the coho) dont like the...

Coho from the beach fly suggestions

Totally agree. Here, feeders don't often come in close to shore, but boat fishers target them with the usual clousers/baitfish patterns. Most of our beach fishing seems to be for staging fish.

Coho from the beach fly suggestions

Interesting (to me) to note the difference in fly preference in different areas. In my area (mid-Vancouver Island), the overwhelming fly of choice for Oct/Nov beach coho is the California Neil....usually tied in charteuse green, in sizes 8 - 10, usually no more than 1 1/4" in length. Local...

How do you transport your fly rods?

I usually transport my rods, fully rigged **, in cases that will allow transport in 2 pieces....doesn't matter if a 2-4 pce rod...a lot more convenient than a fixed rod rack system. ** There's little I enjoy less than arriving at a spot, then having to uncase each component (like Mr Bean opening...

    Riverstick Custom Wading Staffs

Yes, I have gone to a TR413 size rubber tire valve stem. The good news is they're easily adaptable to staffs using the chair leg tips. To install, I insert a 1" length of 3/8” I.d. rubber fuel line hose to approx 3/8"” below flush, moisten the valve stem, then, using a mallet, tap it in. It...
