    What's in your vise?

Ghost Minnow (Flyfishfoods) This one could stand to be a touch sparser and grayer or browner on top as well, but it works. These are the right size and translucency to match young of the year shad in the Columbia or dace in some of the lakes. Hook: Fulling Mill Carp Bonio #8 Tail: a mix of...

    NFR Good binoculars

I am a birder (though not a very one) and generally spend at least five hours a week walking around looking for wildlife. For my purposes the Nikon Prostaff 10x30 is more than good enough. Lightweight, easy to use, compact to fit easily in my pack, easy to focus and plenty sharp, clear and...

This site and the members are great.

The Dry Falls thread and a reply to one of my posts with information about Praying Mantis reminded how much I appreciate the vast store of interests and expertise on the site. Virtually any subject has someone with personal and/or professional expertise and willingness to share that knowledge...

    Cell Phone Pics

Interesting to me the colors of these Praying Mantis. I always thought they adjusted their colors to surroundings like a chameleon, but these were all in the desert with nothing bright green for miles. Rattlesnake Mountain.

    Fish release tool

I used to use a Ketchum release and didn’t even own a net. It worked but I now believe that a net is best for the fish. When using a release tool the fish have to be played out a bit more and tend to thrash around and sometimes break off with your fly too. Typically they seem to calm right down...

    NFR Got any mammal pictures

There is a beaver house nearby that is currently housing four beavers and four minks. That is if the mink don’t actually live in the beaver house they are immediately next door. This guy swims out 20 yards from shore grabs a crayfish and back to shore in about 20 seconds. He does this around six...

    What's in your vise?

My usual frog. These are landing right side up every time and floating with the hook and back legs down. It seems as if having the deer hair body start right at the hook point makes it all work best. At least for the Kona XSSs I have been using.

Best adhesive to reinforce level leech pin thread wraps?

I like Z-ment for all superglue type fly tying purposes. Penetrates well, dries fast but not too fast, cheaper than other zap-a-gap brand glues and the bottle and brush stay functional for years. That said, any penetrating superglue will be great for this use. I have never had a pin mounted with...
