I made a copy of a Leonard 50D myself a few years ago. I'll bring it so I can compare it to a original. The one I made seems to work well with a 5wt, but I might see what it does with a 4wt line.

Wow, great retirement gift with a great start to a lot more fun with a new rod as a companion. Oh, the adventures and stories they will create.

That looks nice! Get some bullet nose slip sinkers and 6" rubber worms to set up a Texas Rigged Worm. Cast to the shore then "hop" it and drop it into deeper water. Strike after the first "tick", second "tick" is the worm being spit out. It's fun to feel the hook set. Mike

With a level wind bait caster, a heavy lure or jig or Texas rigged worm makes life easier. It takes some effort to learn how to cast them (similar to learning to cast a fly rod) but once you get it it's like riding a bike. You always will be able to do it after a few warmup casts.

I believe the grip and reel seat are made to be reversable to mount to the base section to use with a bait caster or a fly reel.

Interesting, I've started messing with Angelus leather dye myself. Yours really creates a nice tone.

I'm guessing that with the UV coating it should be pretty durable. The flies I'm tying are size 14-18 so I don't think they have enough mass to crash into a rock. But having pretty much any color bead I want on short notice is the idea that I like.

For someone new to bamboo this is a great way to test the water and learn about the different casting personalities of these rods. You'll get a chance to see what type of taper fits your casting style the best.

Sounds like you created a winner there Steve. Sometimes the short rods can surprise you with the amount of line they can keep in the air. (y)
