Who said fly fishing is expensive.....

At least two lodges that fish the Kulik River do it. If weather permits and they can get there, it’s basically all they do. Kulik Lodge itself does not. In fact, I think I have only fished from a boat in the river once while staying with them. A day when it was uncharacteristically slow and we...

Who said fly fishing is expensive.....

You’d have access to lots of water staying pretty much anywhere in western MT. I’d personally pick somewhere with easy access to Missoula, Bozeman or Kalispell, though I would not stay in town if possible. If there’s running water in that part of the state, it likely holds trout. Don’t really...

Who said fly fishing is expensive.....

One thing I see in AK a lot that drives me bonkers is the guides back trolling rivers. Outside of a physical ailment, I am not sure why you would pay that much to have a guide zig zag back and forth across miles of river while you drag a dalli llama off the back of the boat. Horriblly boring way...

Who said fly fishing is expensive.....

I’ve fished out of only one “dedicated” fishing lodge but have done so 7 or 8 times now. It’s in AK and it’s pricy. The lodge itself is great. The food is good but what you are paying for IMO is access. To their boats, planes, their privilege on certain rivers, and guides which are required most...

    Puget Sound

I fished next to you for a bit today I think. That water looked great, the fish just weren’t there. In casting distance anyway. Interesting because a lot of good size rezzies were not far south of there in 10 last week. Hopefully they move north in short order! 1-1 for me today over 2 beaches...

    Whale tales!

A 6 would be fine. The PS utility weight. From SRC to grey whales.

    Puget Sound

The beach I was fishing was not hot, but there were a few fish around. Lucked out and was done before the wind picked up with my first MA 9 beach fish of the season.

    Rain

I agree. I think AK gets two seasons; a Seattle winter (summer) and a real winter… in winter. I’ve fished there for a week in mid-July the last 8-10 years and wear the exact same stuff I wear when I fish SRC here in winter.

    AK 2026

Unfortunately, I am stuck to where folks can get me so not getting the opportunity to fish much unmolested water. That said, I really enjoy the lodge we go to and I have had opportunity the last couple of years to be the first guest of theirs to fish some of the waters they frequent. That has...

    Puget Sound

There were a bunch of boats out for sure. Not sure how it compares to previous years. I bet conditions Saturday kept some folks home too. Not dangerous but also not all the enjoyable, especially in smaller boats. I came home soaked through to my skivies in my 17 foot center console. Forgot the...

Reflections from the end of my first long term relationship

I don’t have any advice brother. Talk to a pro if you feel it’s necessary. One thing I can say now after 50 years (yikes!) of life experience is things will most likely come around. The likelihood of that statement being true even higher if your younger. In that regard, your in good shape. Oh...

What are the 5 most important and most used materials in your flies?

I mostly tie for Puget Sound species and buy most of my trout flies outside of a few select patterns. If I could only have 5 for the sound, I feel like I could tie 75% of the patterns I use effectively with these materials. Marabou Schlappen Bucktail Flat Diamond Braid Flashabou GITD One big...

A long trip equals a lot of pics - return trip added

Looks like a great trip! Those sheep have been feeding in that same field since at least the 90’s when I was in college. I’m sure much longer. Always cool to see them.

    Puget Sound

Hit it again today. Only king landed had one too may fins and was sent packing. Fly fishing for rezzies was good again though. 8-9 over a two hour period. Thank god for the wind protection of points though…yikes. Bumpy out there today when I was out in the open jigging for kings. Two of the...

    Puget Sound

Hit the Sound for a short session this afternoon. Planned to jig a point for Kings but saw no big bait balls on the finder. Instead, noticed a nice juicy rip coming off the point with a few jumping shakers in it. Time to put down the jig rod and pickup the fly rod. 2-5 on adult fish with a few...

    Puget Sound

Hit the sound today using a mix of gear and fly. Wanted an MA 10 or 11 king and a then planned to target coho on the fly. Took too long tracking down a good king so decided to keep one just shy of 25 and then went hunting for coho. Glad I did, it was the highlight of the day. All in 7-12 on...

    AK 2026

He seemed pretty relaxed. Stopped, looked at us for a second but kept walking calmly by. Didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Got a good video of him but have no idea how to post that here.

    AK 2026

Just wrapped our 2026 AK trip. The same program as the last few years. Camping at Brooks for a few days with the bears and then a week at Kulik Lodge. The bears were the bears. Always cool to see them and enjoy an encounter or two. The fishing was solid as well. What I love about AK, even...
