    NFR Official Summer Concerts thread!

Rage Against the Machine at the PNC Arena in Raleigh was awesome. Was a bit concerned with an older band with no new material just mailing it in, but they still rock. Only wish Zack hadn't injured his foot earlier in the tour as he had to sit the whole concert. Voice is all that matters...

    Kayak Fly Fishing

When I used to fly fish out of a kayak, there were occasions that the fish were inside the kelp beds (I mostly fished areas 4 and 6) and it was worth it to have a kayak without anything underneath to hang up (I even had to pull the rudder up). I never felt at a disadvantage without pedals or...

    Boat Rods

As others have said, a 9 foot rod is as long as you want to go imo. The material is immaterial as get what you like flex and budget wise. I would always take two rigged rods so I would have a floater rigged with a popper and a rod rigged to fish deeper. Time spent switching lines and or shooting...

    NFR Official Summer Concerts thread!

It's also a bonus when the pit starts right in front of where you're standing. Opens up the view to the stage. You pay by getting bumped into from time to time but made a concert in NYC about two weeks before Covid shut down the city even better.

    Great Elwha Bull Trout Article

The experiment for wild fish is still working without hatcheries for summer steelhead, bull trout, and sea-run cutthroat. There have been articles about the return of wild summer steelhead that are quite impressive. The fish that historically utilized the upper watershed should see pretty...

    Chapter Next

Good luck in NC, it's a great state with wonderful weather outside of the coastal towns having hurricanes. Enjoy the sunshine without any smoke. If you have any questions about NC feel free and PM me (I've lived in Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and currently am on Hatteras Island).

    Magic Carpet Ride

I would think soaking some scent (Ala shark fishing) down near the bottom anchored up in some of these shallow spots would be the ticket.... of course you have to do it quick because if you blink the season is over ;)

    Westport Meat Trip

FYI, imo Dramimine works best if you take a dose the night before as well as the morning of. That seemed to work best for clients outside of the patch. Morning of is hit or miss because you may end up puking it up before it has a chance to get in your system.

Colombia Supreme Court Bans Catch and Release

What civilizations have given up netting fish?

    NFR Twitter

The answer is yes. This is the lesson of the past ten years. When people say it can’t be worse and then make decisions that clearly make it worse because “it can’t be worse”

    NOF 2022

I think there's definitily a difference in gear vs. fly when it comes to this debate. At a 5% mortality (which I believe is high for non-netted fly caught coho) you can release 40 fish before killing 2 fish. It would be an interesting experiment to have WDFW biologists run quota numbers based...

    NOF 2022

I doubt you'd fit my definition of dirt bag. Certainly not for gear fishing. I don't enjoy it as much but have done a ton of it. I just figure there's space between a perceived resource issue regarding c&r of saltwater coho and being forced to retain fish I might not otherwise harvest. We've...

    NOF 2022

I have to ask in all honesty though, is it really impacting the resource as much as everyone feels it is. I remember really short seasons and closures prior to wild release. The season length has dramatically increased and the fishing since the regulation change has been nothing short of...

    NOF 2022

Trailer a boat to the coast, run 15-20 miles offshore, and fish for twenty minutes. Sounds fun.

    NOF 2022

Always surprised me too, but I understand it a little more now. Might have something to do with needing a boat and the price of access for fly fishing guides (charter licenses, short ass seasons at times, smaller parties) and also the infrastructure in the ports themselves (specific from sekiu...

    NOF 2022

I get leaving Neah if you want in tuna, but imo coho fishing peaks last week of July through third week of August. The fish do get bigger the later in the season too. All that krill to coho is …

    Hoochie Fly Patterns

I don't recall the pattern at all, I was too busy watching the National Geographic special and unhooking coho.
