Farewell to Maltby Antiques - The hunting grounds are closing

As far as I know it was the last of its breed. But old classic gear will continue to bubble up from closets, attics, basements and where the owners or estate sale buyers will go to sell them is a good question.

I agree 100%! And it’s surprisingly comfortable to fish. IMO, Heddon figured out the ideal shape to make a solid wood grip comfortable which I think applies to any material, so when I had a custom rod made by Chris Carlin I ordered that shape grip.

Greg, sorry to hear you’ll miss this one. Glad to hear Jack refinished your rare and amazing #60, the best Heddon model ever produced IMO!

    Bamboo fling 2025

Many bamboo rod collectors hate the 8’ rods, calling them neither short enough nor long enough. Kind of stuck in no-man’s land. But I think that’s an East Coast bias myself. Back east they fish a lot of small, meandering small streams that run through meadows and woodlands. Shorter 7’ and...

    Bamboo fling 2025

It'll be great fun, as always, to see and cast all the great rods you all have collected. Maybe this year someone can give me a brief lesson on casting one of those huge speys, I've always been too mystified to pick one up to give it a try. I'll enjoy seeing the beautiful and great casting...

    Bamboo fling 2025

Thanks Dave. I've had an unexpected conflict pop up that morning and probably won't make it until close to noon, so the later start works perfectly for me. I'll be excited to see the gang, lots of great rods, and also to see our new friend Jack Holdridge join us for the first time. Jack says...

    Tim Cottage, RIP

I'm deeply saddened to hear this. Tim will be missed. I will share a couple photos I had the chance to take when Tim kindly brought some of his gear over a couple years ago to shoot.

An FE Thomas comes to life

That FET tube label is very cool. It's great that the FET rod company remains active and awesome today under a great current owner. It's a testament to the wonderful brand created by Fred after he spent his early years as one of Hiram's talented apprentices. Having a great rod made by FET in...

    Passing of author Steve Probasco

I'm also sorry to hear this. Back in the late 1980's some friends often joined me on trips to Dry Falls. More than once, Steve Probasco and some of his friends were on the lake with us, and we always knew it because they were a rambunctious crew. They knew how to have fun and find great fishing.

    Why Do You Troll?

I think some days the bobber rules, other days my trolling buddies out fish me, by lots. Regardless, the gray-er my hair gets, the more I enjoy fishing the bobber, in one spot. Probably partly due to laziness, partly due to increasingly finicky hamstring muscles, but I think mostly due to...

    Dreaming of summer....

We're entering lakes fishing season, but my dreams are still filled with dry flies on moving water with a classic bamboo rod in hand. Cheers gang!

    Why Do You Troll?

I've noticed that lakes often have a mysterious tendency to "turn off" and "turn on." You can look around on a crowded lake and see nothing being caught, then later you look around and see bent rods all over, including yours. So, I used to troll, thinking I was finding where the fish were...

An FE Thomas comes to life

So glad that Jack was able to handle the re-wrapping of some of the signature wraps. Those can be difficult to do well, but Jack is a very talented gentleman. That particular cork grip's shape is my favorite shape, pretty much exactly the same as the grip I chose for my custom ordered Chris...

Olivia Elia feature video (with a huge shout out to Dave Dozer and a tip of the hat to Preston Thompson Guitars)

I spend a lot of time in Central Oregon, one of my favorite places in the world. I love the fly fishing there, and it's a hotbed of high end acoustic guitar making which is another passion of mine. One visit a few years ago I reached out to Dave Dozer wondering if I might be able to visit his...
