NFR Stoked on surfing/Stoked about a surf shop in Seaside, OR

Nice! I’m splitting time between a 6’0 squashtail and a 5’8” fish most of the time. Heading out on a trip bit later this month. Yesterday went out and had some ankle slappers locally.

    Wales!

So….I blinked and now my little one turned 16yo and is heading to a 2 year prep school in the UK. So many emotions. Tough to reconcile that my little mudskipper is leaving home. This was her just a minute ago… In less than a month, I am flying out to the UK and then to Wales to drop her off...

NFR Stoked on surfing/Stoked about a surf shop in Seaside, OR

Sweet board! For many years Todd Kay (TDK) or Rusty were my shapers, but when I moved to Hawaii it got tougher to work 1x1 with those guys. Ever since I have been mixing it up with different shapers, though when I reached out to Rusty a few years ago it was just like the old days hanging with...

NFR Stoked on surfing/Stoked about a surf shop in Seaside, OR

I grew up in/on the ocean surfing almost every day and spent my early years making lots of life decisions through the lens of “will there be surf there?” Living up in the “2+ hours one way to surf” portion of the PNW now for >10 years, and trying to juggle wife, kids, high intensity job, etc...

This Ain't Good...As A Matter Of Fact, Damn Sad!!!

Admittedly this isn’t a great look for crew cab red dodge diesel drivers (;)) but rather than focusing on the negative, how cool is it that those kids seem so helpful? Through a different lens (maybe overly rosy but I’m feeling good this morning because I’m still basking in the afterglow of some...

    Plan B

Seeing your daughter brought back memories of my daughter at that age. So much fun! My daughter is now well into her teens. Still fun, but just different than when she was still a little mudskipper.

    Topwater 2023

Ok this is premature but I just picked up a bunch of these frogs to support my topwater dreams. I realize nerding out on a store bought fly might not be a great look, but i don’t have the time or talent to tie something like this so I am stoooooked at the idea of chucking one of these into some...

    2023 Bluegill/Crappie/Sunfish showoff thread

Today I went out again - this time with the Hobie. Fishing was pretty slow, but still a few bluegill to hand. Weird though - large number of dead perch. Seems to happen post spawn very year, but I have never seen as many floaters as I did today.

    2023 Garden Thread

Feels like no garden thread would be complete without mentioning invasive Japanese knotweed (https://www.nwcb.wa.gov/weeds/japanese-knotweed). I have a little bit on my property and have been fighting it for years, mostly because my next door neighbor sucks at taking care of their property...

    2023 Bluegill/Crappie/Sunfish showoff thread

Thanks for providing that Whitlock article. Yesterday mid-afternoon i had a few hours free, so i strung up my 7’ 3wt Butterstick, grabbed some small poppers and small buggers and had good old fashioned fun.

    Upper CF

Unfortunately, the decline in trout populations in SW MT rivers and (some) streams is pretty widespread at this point, regardless of whether they are directly tied back to the Superfund site. I don’t like being the “you should have seen what it was like years ago” guy but….my family started fly...

    NFR NCAL ideas this weekend

My friend has a cabin on Wrights Lake. We tried to get in 2.5 weeks ago (also to assess damage and cleanup) using his rig. No way in hell - we should have brought a snowmobile as that would have been the play. Our hypothesis that we might be able to get in far enough to just snowshoe the rest...

    2023 Bluegill/Crappie/Sunfish showoff thread

I sometimes use a small popper with a soft hackle dropper. I haven’t had much success with the dropper. Unsure why. They like the popper, but maybe my dropper selection is bad or I need to adjust for depth, or ?. I plan to experiment more with the setup this summer. Yesterday evening after...

    Carp question

Carp are just an illusion, and we only see big carp because our minds figure “hey if I’m going to hallucinate i might as well go big.” I know because my eyes tell me i am seeing massive carp cruising around all summer….but can never get them interested in anything i throw. I know I’m really...

    NFR Water in Your Whisky?

I’m guilty of enjoying a scotch -and-soda from time to time. Blended scotch works for me there.

    Topwater 2023

Yesterday after work I roped some little SMBs with the smallest popper pattern I have. I could see a big “Billy Approved” largemouth lurking under some structure, but couldn’t get it to take anything on the surface - big, small, medium, etc. I was juuuuuust about to crack the code (maybe -...

    Bird identification help

I was fishing at a pond near my house when I saw it, so def qualifies as wetlands. This pond has all kinds of cool birds (including a nesting pair of great blue herons as well).

    Bird identification help

I saw what I think is a red winged blackbird yesterday, and again today. That was pretty cool (Crappy picture below)
