    2026 goals- Fishy edition

Or drag a big dry around on the surface. Might not work, but it's fun when it does.

    Superglue

No matter the brand, I have issues keeping a bottle going over time. I have learned a few tricks (using a bodkin to spread glue and keep the bottle neck clear is a good one), but if I don't use a bottle for a few weeks, it's usually trouble of some sort. The thing that always blows my mind is...

    2026 goals- Fishy edition

After a few years of doing a fair amount of traveling to fish, saving for a wedding and getting more serious about doing the same toward retirement will keep me mostly home-bound this year. I guess that makes my goal doing my best to get out as often as possible and make the most of what's...

The family man seeks to sneak in mornings to fish in the Keys

My overall takeaway from trying to find DIY fishing in the Keys has been sort of similar to doing it around here; lack of access to productive water and crowding in the available spots make it challenging. Additionally, the enormous amount of water, only some of which is productive, make it hard...

    The 2025 NFL Season Discussion

Man! They just refuse to put this thing away. How often does Myers miss 2 in one game?

    The 2025 NFL Season Discussion

Anyone else get the feeling the points NOT being scored are going to become a problem at some point tonight? Sure hope not, but....

    What's your most surprising turn?

I've gone the opposite direction and almost never fish tippet lighter than 5x anymore. If I can get 4x through the hook eye, I usually stop there. I have heard the Fall River is flat out spooky, so I can believe it might be necessary to go smaller there. I think my biggest "change" over the...

    Skykomish/Snohomish Post 2025 Flood updates/questions

I suggest leaving the boat at home and getting out there on foot. The fish are still there, and minus 10 boats pounding every productive spot before you can get there, the success rate from the bank usually goes up significantly. I like to float as much as anyone, but when you can't do that...

    NFR College Football 2025

Great game. Pretty cool seeing the likes of Indiana and Ole Miss in the semifinals.

This Georgia-Ole Miss game is surprisingly entertaining! Much better than the earlier games today.

    Last trips of 2025?

Beautiful lake fish! 10-ish trout is solid work this time of year. I did some river fishing this week. I mostly caught and released big, fire truck buck coho, but I did score a nice little hatchery chromer steelhead on the 27th. First fish of 2026 was another colored-up coho. Beautiful...

    NFR College Football 2025

Texas alum here. I was surprised both teams put out a pretty good effort despite a bunch of starters "opting out." College football has officially been relegated to the NFL minor league at this point, which is a shame. Game got ridiculously chippy in the second half. Lots of dumb penalties on...

    Barred Marabou Hack

Good idea! Straws are handy for lots of things. I've achieved "good enough for the fish" with a Sharpie by tying in the feather, gathering the fibers, attaching a good set of hackle pliers to the end, and pulling tight. Kind of the same principle.

Heck of a game. Not much defense for either team, but the 49ers made the play they needed at the end. Here we go....

    The 2025 NFL Season Discussion

Yeah, you get that a lot when the Cowboys and the Lions are staple teams. I guess the Lions aren't mathematically eliminated yet, so there's that. Throw in a bunch of hurt QBs and take away the playoff implications and it's time to watch Christmas movies.

    Merry Christmas to all!

Happy holidays, all! Kiddos are coming fo dinner tonight, and it looks like Santa came through on my wish and will be providing a bunch of fishable days while I'm on vacation. Good tidings!

Nymphing and Dry Fly General Purpose Trout Fly Rod

I recommend a 5-wt. for an all-purpose trout rod. A 4-wt. is ideal for fighting trout, but a 5-wt. gives you more casting range (for larger streams, of which we have many around here) and makes it easier to cast larger flies, multiple flies, and indicators (or even small streamers) than a 4...
