Two senior couples; one with a bad knee(me) seeking fishing/accomodations looking for area input.
Thanks.
Mark,
Assuming you’re looking at Flaming Gorge area due to the ask about fishing options, plus food and accommodations. I’ve stayed in the area multiple times and different seasons.
Accommodations: There are multiple options but the two I’ve always used are Flaming Gorge Resort and Red Canyon Lodge.
FGR is about 30% less expensive than RCL with a decent restaurant, clean rooms, excellent internet, along with a good shop for most anything you might need for recreating. Two couples would work fine there. We, my wife and I, when staying there always book in the section up behind the shop and restaurant. They also have a laundry house if you need it. 15 minutes above DJU.
Red Canyon Lodge is about 20 minutes above DJ at about 7K’ of altitude. It has a small shop, good restaurant but only dinner is served. Beautiful area with cabins, some connected doubles which would work. Internet is iffy at times but sitting on the deck taking a nap at 330 pm ain’t bad. When Sitting on the deck drinking coffee at 0500 the silence is deafening and all is good in the world.
Multiple opportunities to book a float on the Green and I highly recommend it. A section, the canyon. Is an awesome float, B section after Red Creek is mor subtle and the C more flat water but evening streamer fishing for cannibles is an option. I’ve always used Spinner Fall for floats but that is more due to the first time fishing there some time ago that they were able to hook me up in less than 2 hours. They’ve always been great. I’ve heard great things about Trout Creek Flies also.
Due to the recent weather and lack of snow pack this year things might be quite different on the river at your time of year and who knows if that might contribute to an extreme opportunity during fire season.
We have always taken two or three days of our time there just to travel some of the back roads, forest roads, and at times no roads to just embrace the opportunity. We’ve always departed there thinking … we should have…could have.. why didn’t we..
Good luck whatever you decide.
