There's a lake in Central Oregon which I fish often when down there, might be where you went. On sunny days the rainbows will feed on the hatching callibaetis for hours and I'll rarely see a brown. But in cloudy weather the browns come out in good numbers. Here's a pic of a cloudy day brown...
