    Puget Sound

I love winter fishing on the sound. It’s been since mid November that I’ve fished much at all. Small bead chain marabou clousers are generally my go to this time of year. However, Miyawaki Beach poppers have been killing it for me. The hookup rate has been as good as anything else, as long as I...

Nautilus GTS 7/8 Ross evolution R Salt

I have the Ross and it’s great, but have not put the drag to any heavy use yet. It should stop a truck, not that that’s really necessary. I think the GTS is a lot lighter.

Been catching a few over the last week but not in big numbers. Covering lots of water and changing flies often seems to be the approach for me. The huge amount of chum fry may be why the fish have been so spread out. Fished out of the boat from 7-9 yesterday. Got a few and lost a few. Hit the...

    Puget Sound

I did my first wet wade in the sound in flip flops this week. It was painful until numbness took over. The boots are a good call. Mud sucking flop blowouts and oyster cuts are a real hazard out here. I do like the simplicity of shorts though.

    Official Beach Line Thread

I tried the needle method but went back to the original way I did it with some changes. This time I super glued the butts, whipped mono tying thread up and down the joint then coated it with flexible solarez. Landed a couple cutthroat and threw a lot of casts with weighted flies. I’ll report...

Thanks for the reference. I watched this but couldn’t get a needle into the CQS line. I think it has a different type of core. I tried to carve away the outside but couldn’t really differentiate the core from the coating.

    Puget Sound

Walked the beach Sunday from 9-10 and found a couple Cutts. This one hung out for the photo shoot. I think I’ve only ever sight fished one of these things, other than jumpers. They blend in well. Second session around 6pm did not go as well. There was a sea lion patrolling one section and this...

    Official Beach Line Thread

I’m a bit of a hack at this. I’ve used the “finger trap” section of braided loops in the past but wanted a bit lower profile. This time I cut the lines at sharp angles and superglued the butts together as one line. Then did a nail knot over the sections and finished it off with flexible solarez...

Since the Coastal quick Shooter in 6 weight is no longer available, I spliced the head and 3’ of running section of a retired CQS to a Wulff running line. Casts great, and I can hold a bit more line in the air during a false cast. Not sure how long my splice will last.

    Puget Sound

Fished my local beach on Thursday for maybe an hour and noticed the same thing. It seemed like the smaller fry were in much larger schools.

Thanks. I haven’t been able to find too many cutthroat lately. Mostly just rezzies. I have seen a couple female Cutts with what looks like wear and tear on the underside but nothing colored like that one.

These are private tide lands, so the laws are a bit different, but you are correct when it comes to recreational harvesting. The shells were returned to the beach though.

    Puget Sound

Ventured out to the canal for a fairly wet family camping trip Saturday through Monday. Saturday evening set up camp and gather some oysters for the fire. Then test the waters. Pink over white Clousers getting some attention. Net was still packed, sometimes if you hold them upside down they...

    Puget Sound

Hit the beach nearly every day for an hour or so over the last couple of weeks and have been doing pretty decent. They are quick little pods of fish that move up and down the beach. I have adopted the heron method, hold the fly and leader in my left hand and wait for them to show and try to get...
