If going metal the exposed screws will eventually be a problem and leak, especially on South facing directions.. I know this from experience on my own outbuildings. Requires some maintenance and often leaks not easily detected. The Snap-Lock style where screws are covered is more expensive...

I know someone who sprays peppermint oil and has had success. This was after a very expensive cleanout procedure on a nearly new truck.

Got a ticket on the Nisqually by a military rent a cop many years ago. Was doing exactly what you were. They almost confiscated my gear. The judge threw it out and said it was ridiculous. But it cost me a day for a trip to Tacoma courts.
