Missed on the first flush of the year...typical...but then three for three on Blue grouse.View attachment 80438

That’s a great black tail! I have never hunted them…I don’t like the places they live but I LOVE what they look like. Their faces have an almost pissed off look to them. A big black tails horns always seem to get heavy and gnarly.I was getting ready to head out for the evening hunt, when I looked out the back window, and this buck was hot after a doe in the field right below the house. I went out the front door to not scare him and shot him, 5 feet from our back yard.View attachment 81995
The WA grouse season used to always open on the 1st.Yeah, Washington is always a day late and a dollar short…which they want to collect in some illegal tax.
ID also….Montana..Sept 1.
I think it’s been two years now that it changed to the 15th. No idea why…The WA grouse season used to always open on the 1st.
They said to protect the new family groups. Apparently the young all stick together for quite some time. Then as fall gets there, they start splitting up. They thought the extra 2 weeks would give them more odds of being through the split up phase.I think it’s been two years now that it changed to the 15th. No idea why…
That stands to reason. I always try to hold when small, probably yearlings flush. Besides I like big fat birds for the plate…They said to protect the new family groups. But the OP asked for photos from “past and present”…Some of you guys need to upgrade your phones for better picture quality.
Better options than old school flip ups.
You are correct. But the OP asked for photos from “past and present”…
My photos, as well as others I’m sure, predate cell phones. And digital too, for that matter. I have snapshots of trips that I wanted to post but time has aged and faded them so badly. Little Kodak Instamatic cameras had their shortcomings.
I’ve enjoyed seeing all these pictures, including yours. You’ve shown some good ones.
