Took advantage of the gorgeous fall afternoon today and headed to a favorite lake up in the hills… there were still a few Vine Maples in full color.
It’s a west side mid-elevation lake that has natural reproduction, thanks to a couple of cool, clear inlet streams. I caught four different age classes of Coastal Cutthroat, which bodes well for at least the next few years.
There are a few Brook Trout in this lake too, and they were all colored up for the fall spawning season.
There are always minnows in the lake and I really like the predatory take when a fish smacks a streamer, so I tend to use those a lot here, regardless of what the trout are feeding on. They always seem to take advantage of a big meal, even when they’re taking emergers at the surface. It’s great fun casting a streamer to those delicate risers, then seeing a big swirl with that solid grab.
Today I used a tandem rig with a streamer as the point fly, and a classic wet fly on the tag. They each produced equally well with about a 50/50 split. Grateful to @Dave Westburg for tying these …
