    Rain

With last nights rain, we are already above the monthly normal for May. Forecast high for Friday is 84 here in Neotsu on the Oregon coast.

Duck broods (especially mallards) can end up in some pretty weird places. Just curious if you got a good enough look at the ducklings to notice if they were newly hatched or not? We have wild mallards nesting in the neighborhood shrubbery around here but Devils Lake is close by.

    Rain

We've had a good start to May on the Oregon Coast (outside Lincoln City) - 4.05 inches and raining now. I welcome the rain but the higher than normal river flows are screwing with my early season tidewater springer fishing.

    Got any bird pics?

Thanks as always for sharing your way cool images Steve. When I participated in spring aerial and ground waterfowl pair counts, single drakes counted as "pair". You are spot on that the hens are likely incubating eggs or perhaps brood rearing. Male puddle ducks (woodies included) often group...

    Backyard Wildlife

Mallards and other puddle ducks (Canada geese too) have been known to nest a mile or more from brood water and then hike their ducklings shortly after they hatch. The theory behind this strategy is to avoid predators that are attracted to water as well as utilizing good nesting cover. They...

Great pic @Kilchis! Is that Canada goose nest on an island or off the ground in a tree?

    Stuff in the Sky

Our youngest daughter attended college for two years in Salina - it was always terrifying to us when she had to go into the basement during tornado warnings.

    Stuff in the Sky

This subject matter is limited within the troposphere ha ha. I just returned from working Tour 1 for Tempest Tours - we started in Oklahoma City and drove about 3500 miles from the Rio Grande to I-70 in Kansas for the 8 day tour. The weather pattern was overall crummy except at the end when it...

    Got any bird pics?

The back of the hen appears to me to be a mallard with newly hatched ducklings (duck nerds would say class 1A ducklings).

    Got any bird pics?

Some waterfowl and shorebirds will make a fairly direct flight to the wintering grounds while moseying back in the spring. Some of this behavior has to do with beefing up for the breeding/brood rearing season.

    March Madness 2024

It's really typical... there's only so many times the ref can blow the whistle. They let them play today - it was brutal. Boiler Up!

    Got any bird pics?

I love these images - those game farm roosters are good looking birds. Spring courtship displays by gallinaceous birds are way cool.

    Truthful Pyramid Lake Report

Ditto what is being said about the ladders - most of the beaches that I fished are ladder beaches. Personally, ladder fishing at Pyramid isn't my thing but I have buddies that are obsessed with the fishery. They are hard core lake guys with pontoon boats and float tubes but never ever use them...

    March Madness 2024

Holmgren would have been a matchup nightmare. Other teams have tried drawing Edey out with not a lot of success. The B1G teams that beat Purdue this season did so from mid range and behind the arc. Turnovers have also been an issue. Both teams are well coached and familiar with one another...

    March Madness 2024

I watched a couple of interviews with Sprinkle last weekend and he seems like a good dude and a good coach. He brought two players with him from Montana State to USU and portal recruited the rest with amazing success this past season. I am not familiar with Washington's program or culture...

    Stuff in the Sky

NOAA SWPC has just issued a G3 geomagnetic storm watch for the early hours of March 25th. I think I am screwed with cloud cover as well. The bright moon is going to suck as well.

    Stuff in the Sky

Aurora Alert! This just popped up in my email from Spaceweather.com: A BIG CME IS COMING: Two sunspots erupted at once on March 23rd, producing a powerful X1-class solar flare. A bright halo CME is now heading for Earth. Models suggest it could reach our planet during the early hours of March...
