Hopper Special

Hook - Mustad 79580 4XL, size 10-12

Thread - Black, 6/0

Tail - Mottled turkey

Body - Pale Yellow-Gray-Green Yarn

Rib - Grizzly hackle, palmered and trimmed.

Underwing - Golden Pheasant Crest (yellow)*

Overwing - Mottled Turkey

Legs - Peacock Herl, knotted to make the joint in the legs**

Hackle - Brown

*The recipe differs from the photo provided in the reference link below. In the photo it appears the underwing is wood duck flank fibers vs golden pheasant crest. I have no idea why these Michigan hopper style patterns require an unseen underwing.

Original photo from the link below

Hopper-Special-reference.jpg

**Tying Tips: Difficult and time consuming. The peacock herl for the legs should be selected

from the eye feathers. The legs can be tied either under or over the wings. The legs are

very delicate and do not hold up well under constant casting.

I recommend finding an alternative material (maybe rubber legs)

Last 2. The Seahawks colors wasn’t intentional, gunna need to tie a Steelers one now. Surprised how the Seahawks bug turned out considering I was using blue bucktail (didn’t have blue body hair)

Beautiful work. What size hooks are you using? It'd really hurt me to lose one on a lily pad.

Thanks! These are smaller ones on gammy b10s size 2.

Bigger ones are on size 1 or ahrex tp light (I think tp605) #1/0 which is same size as b10s size 1.

I mostly fish these on 10-15lb maxima green tippet so I don’t lose many, but it definitely stings when you do!
