Lately, the cutts in the little blue lines have preferred something more subdued like this.

tail - yarn flame
rib - medium tinsel opal
body - Ice Dub hare’s ear gray
1st shoulder - golden pheasant body feather red
2nd shoulder - pheasant rump

These are a test build to get 8ft deep in swirling water that holds heads, trying to avoid splits. Bobber won’t work. If gear you’re forced to run heavy weight in front of a heavy spoon or jig.

When you do finally hook one the spot rewards you with an exuberant amount of chaos: a burst through some turbulent water with a jump or four, willful line management as the free line spools, and unfortunately often a spit or break.

Used Davie McPhail’s fly as inspiration. Subbed pheasant rump for the pt legs since I don’t have any an wasn’t in the mood to knot some up; the Muddler head just because.

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - Uni 6/0 black
body - Ice Dub hot orange
wing(s) - elk hair dyed orange
shoulder - pheasant rump dyed black
collar/head - deer hair dyed black

Ok, no cheating here, just my same boring shit. Buuut, here's where I'm at with this. foam in the back (a smaller amount than previously) and no counterweight up front. I really liked how the fly like this I had tied earlier turned out in the water. On the black one, instead of standard bucktail underneath the head, I took 4 clumps of 3 separate colors of the backside of bucktail and packed it in pretty tightly plus a double dose of dubbing for the head (purple on both sides first, then NMF black/red up top and FTD black underneath (FTD has way less flash and I wanted to go a bit more understated on this--at least for what the fish typically sees). On the sucker/pikeminnow pattern, I only did 2 clumps of backside bucktail and a single bit of dubbing (top and bottom) for the head. Anyway, sorry for the same boring shit, but also thanks for being my audience for my thought process (like you have a choice if you're reading this!

What do you mean by backside bucktail? Nice flies.

I've done a couple of these (though nowhere near as nice) for nymphing in runoff conditions with a bright orange mustad jig. Works well but can also get caught on the bottom and in tangles. I've been meaning to try them for bass as well.

Tried dubbing, hackle and plain thread for the head, none of which gave me the look I wanted; found the aftershaft sifting through the waste bag on the vise.

thread - Uni 8/0 fire orange/black

A couple for tomorrow.
Pink for the belly or wing? Haven’t we had that debate before. ;)
