Panama

So…my wife grew up in the Canal Zone from 1964 to 1976…her dad was a canal pilot and later the harbor master. Her childhood friend , who was born in the Canal Zone, decided to bring her mother’s ashes back to Panama to rest with her father that was buried there. Initially, this was supposed to be a “ladies only” trip with all the friends that grew up there…but by the time the trip was formed, several of them had dropped out, leaving only my wife, her friend and her daughter. This is when they asked me to accompany them…after some thought, I agreed to go…but I was going to bring a couple fly rods with me.

Life of the Party
Man, seeing all the old school military housing turned to public use is weird but not unexpected.

Was stationed at Fort Gulick on the Atlantic side in the 80's. This is bringing back a ton of memories.

I have been to Panama several times over the years (to surf) but never on the Caribbean side - the pics look really cool.

The Pacific side had great surf, but some spots were pretty sharky. As an added element, one of the outer islands we used to surf had a gnarly prison on the island. The prisoners were seemingly allowed to roam the island (?). That was a strong disincentive for us to never go ashore - we surfed it by boating to it from another island and the boat captain used to keep repeating “never go ashore.” We were told the prisoners didn’t try to escape, as the tiger sharks were numerous and the swim was miles of open ocean.

The Pacific coast in that area had a lot of scorpions too. So. Many. Scorpions. It made walking around at night creepy.

Tom, you are an early riser…
Yes, usually up around 2:30. I usually get students homework graded for return, read fish porn and news. Fall asleep around 8:00. My dad had the same clock.
