View attachment 85133This is a Dragonfly Nymph made from foam. I tie in lead wire under the shaft to make it have neutral buoyancy. That helps keep it out of the weeds. Hen hackle is trimmed top and bottom so side hackle resembles legs. I use a sinking line to get it on the bottom and a slooww retrieve. They hit it softly. I usually don't feel the take but watch my rod tip. When it starts bouncing I set the hook. Its produced some big trout. Crudely tied but effective..
I'm thinking this one needs a step by step tutorial.

*Are there any materials that glow as well as the Atomic Glow strips? I tried Chernobyl dubbing and glow in the dark flashabou but both are incredibly weak in comparison. Ended up splitting the atomic strips in 3rds for the tail and collar.

This video shows you how to build the head of the fly. I do it just the same.. I first add a strip of lead wire under the shaft. I install the hackle the same way he does. The body is done the same way except from the hook end to the center. Work the foam back to the curve and then fold forward..This body technique is the same as a foam beetle. Many examples on You Tube. Leave a gap to place the hackle. The width of the foam is different with the body being more slender. Exaggerate the head width. I build them big, this is a size 8 bait hook..20231008_171350.jpg

Salty cutts on the brain....

For whatever reason, variations on woolly buggers work especially well on the fish that show back up around my local beaches this time of year. With more people fishing, it's getting little harder to trick 'em, so I'm going to try a few new color combos (based on old successes). If that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to up my saltwater fly tying game....

And, for fun, a simple gurgler. Just maybe....

Bjorn, at the Fly Fisher in Lacey, ties a fly like the top one, with a real short hackle. It's totally colored cinnamon. It's his pattern for a polychate worm and is a killer for SRC..

As seen on the "over 4" contest thread"....just barely made it at 10". Counter-balanced, will give a nice glide bait action in addition to a decent jerk bait action depending on how you strip it
