Whooof! A few days ago my sister wanted to see what I might fish topwater-wise for pike up in Ontario next week, and I sent a pic of one of my poppers. Suddenly all 3 sisters wanted ones in custom colors...and if I'm making them for the ladies, I can't leave out the guys! They needed to be sparser than I'd normally do, to lower the wind resistance to weight ratio, so they can toss them with spinning rods. Just finished, flying out to MN with 'em in the morning:

When I saw Norm had posted the green butt skunk it got me thinking about my earlier days casting flies for steelhead, this pattern was no doubt one of the first I tied and fished. A real classic, at least to me. Your comment on the down turned eye got me thinking (again, thinking?) about a hook that Tiemco used to sell. It was one of my favorite hooks for steelhead flies, here's a very poorly tied skunk:

I caught quite a few steelhead using this hook with different ties. The most memorable fish was a big buck that plucked a popsicle tied on this hook while swinging through the Top of the Y.
The very first steelhead I caught on a swung fly was on a green butt skunk like yours just down stream from Machias on the Pilchuck, a nice memory.
