We've got many birds nesting on our property. The bird songs in the mornings with the windows open is incredible. The dove's cooing and the Stellar's squawking can be kind of annoying though!
These Robins are in a rhody next to the garage.
I saw this on my way home from work yesterday evening; just S of the 1st Avenue S bridge over the Duwamish. Immature Bald Eagle hanging out with a crowd of ne'er-do-wells. Normally these don't like each other's company.

It was giving itself what seemed to be a good dirt dust bath but maybe it was also doing what you explained.

The local flickers make their own dust bath
