The original plan for this weekend was a 3 day canoe trip to a popular lake. There would be frolicking, fishing, and maybe some pancakes. But the weather had a different idea and come Thursday we aborted that plan. We went on to sulk thinking we weren't going to do anything when friends in town decided we were in fact going to do something so we grabbed a last minute permit into a Central Oregon high lake known for good fishing and easy hiking (naturally we brought the kid instead of leaving her home with the cat).
It's a short 2.5 mile hike in where we set up camp and rigged up rods. I've been here before but the fishing was never as good as it was this weekend. Between 3 of us, we landed about a dozen fish, with 3 coming in at exactly 17". I was out voted 1 to 3 in terms of retaining vs releasing so in the end we kept 4 fish and had a bit of a feast. The hot fly was a very Tom Butler Hot Orange Zonker and Simi Seal Leech.
The weather took a turn overnight and we woke up to low 40s and a cold kid so we hiked out--just in time for the pouring rain--and headed for the nearest milkshake.
