Something to try this spring based on a Lucky Wiggler variation that I saw on Facebook.

Hook: TMC 8089 #2
Shank: 55 MM
Joint: 65# PowerPro
Tail" Olive Marabou 3/16" orange brass bead to sink the tail section slightly
Body: Olive, light Olive and yellow deer over white deer
Nose: Black over white deer
Eyes: 6 MM dragon eyes
Wow, that is going to catch fish. Do you think the action of the rear section could be enhanced by a reverse taper or a bit of a flare in front of the tail? Great trimming job!

Sorry, off topic from flies a little. I've been researching these fowl lately. Seems the scarcity of capes, i assumed was due to endangerment of habitat or whatever...due actually to cross breading with domestic stock in Phillipines, Hawaiia, ect. Not much pure lines left. Also breeding in captivity is a little harder than a normal chicken (but these aren't chickens lol)
I started down the rabbit hole as to why I wouldn't just raise a flock of these for capes. I have chickens already, why not. (Weather is the main factor up here, warm weather specie).
So now I'm down the rabbit hole of cross breeding for weather resistance, but somehow maintaining a half ass cape integrity.
Might be a cool project (that I would most likely fail at).

I've seen a few comments online that maybe these capes should be phased out of fly tying due to endangerment of the specie. But it seems to me, this breed is probably screwed regardless of our hobby.

Just tying stuff on a hook. Loosely based on Charlie craven pattern.

Palmered marabou
Flash and stuff
Guinea hackle and gill. Also UV green hackle.
Still had room on hook so peacock dub

I like the look and action of palmered marabou. Gonna mess with that more.

One issue with the dubbing is it has very fine spandex “legs”. They can get trapped when the dubbing is spun in a loop and snag when you brush it out; I cut them loose with scissors (adds at least 5 seconds to each fly I tie:giggle:).

Scott

Red Headed Hot Mess
Hook - Hanak H450 BL Jig #10
Bead- MFC Tungsten Lucent Orange 4.3mm
Thread - black
Tail - black marabou & 4 strands of black Krystal Flash
Body - black marabou with some leftover tied back as a messy wing/throat.
Rib- brass, silver or copper wire
Shoulder - Ice Dub Peacock Black combed out

New pattern I'm going to try this year. I fished something like it years ago on a standard hook, peacock and brass bead and it did very well. I figure the upgraded hook, ice dub & sexy orange bead will catch even more. Or...just cost more. :p

Fish that with confidence! It's similar to what I call my stupid stocker leech. Run it 4.5-6' under a float for the first few weeks. Works in streams too.
