First fish of 2023

My home water dropped into very nice shape Sunday so I was able to get out for several hours in the afternoon. Hooked a steelhead right off the bat and had it on for maybe 3sec before the LDR.

Then I worked my ass off for the skunkbuster below. Yuki was impressed...

This small fish was the first to net of 2023, on a hares ear. I had a better fish on the egg on point but as you can see I had issues with streamside vegetation.

Not gonna lie, a little bit disappointed your first fish of 2023 wasn't a triple header. Or at least a double. ;)
I got a dry fly eat on a tiny fly today so I'm happy.

Sorry no pics, but, you know, Greenlake. First outing last week at my fav lake was skunk shit on cold toast. Today was hard-earned and won.

Two, 2 or 3 second hooks ups and one bump. Also three fly changes. Went through a new pattern (too much UV bling?), a recent go-to pattern, and finally asking, “WWTLD?” (What Would Tim Lockhart Do?). TBH, it was nothing more than pulling out a #12 black mini-bugger.

Last fly change turned up a 14” rainbow. The earlier errors reminded me to “play” and not “fight” the fish. Sometimes the worst days lead to a good day’s lesson-reward.

BTW, no pic of the fish, but my friend posted the rod bend on IG.
