Puget Sound

I’ve had 5 OBS lines crack or break over the last three years (3 cracked, 2 broke). One broke while stretching to stop tangles (a different nearly as annoying issue). The other while trying to break off a hung up fly. The fly line broke before the 12 lb leader did.

Cracks occurred around the loop on one and at the point in the running line where I hold it while making my final false cast from the beach for coho on the other two. I assume because the same cast is made hundreds of times a day during coho season (fling it as far as you can :)). Also had at least two CQS failures back in the day.

Yet I bought another with my own money towards the end of the last coho beach season because it’s the best line for that job I have been able to find.

Sorry if my initial question hijacked the PS thread. If I have anything else to say, I’ll move it over to the beach line thread. That said, this thread is great in that it often takes twists and turns but in the end remains focused on the great fishery many of us have in our own backyards. One of the best long term threads on the forum!

@Irafly and I got my boat out on the sound today for some pre Thanksgiving fun.

Cutthroat fishing was OK. Not great but we caught a fair number of fish. Nothing huge, though we did each manage to lose/miss some real quality fish.

Highlight of the day was encountering something I can honestly say I've never really experienced in the sound....aggressive, bitey chum. I've caught my fair share of chum in the sound and on the canal, but mostly estuary situations where they are schooled up and milling about. In those situations for me it was always a floating line, long leader, sparse flies and slow presentation type of fishing. Today we encountered a fairly large number of chum while cutthroat fishing and we started hooking them casting type 5 lines, stripping quite fast, and with src flies. The Silver Surfer in particular was just getting crushed. The takes were savage and at times we could actually watch the fish chase down the fast moving flies. We didn't put up huge numbers but we each touched a decent number of these fish. It was pretty damned fun.

The best part was that we were also catching src, and then chum would roll through and it got real fun. On one cast I lost a chum then four or five strips later missed a nice src. That was a first for me.

I often encounter chums while src fishing this time of year but in these scenarios where I'm fishing I've never seen them show much interest in flies, let alone fast moving flies. It was super cool. A couple times I had to use forceps to dig out my fly as they damn near swallowed it. 6 wts weren't the ideal tool for the job but other than one extremely hot fish that tried to spool Ira they were mostly of manageable size.

I can't say what was responsible for this behavior but I wasn't complaining. Man it was fun fishing. Wouldn't break my heart to experience more of that!

Fished for about 3hrs this morning at 2 beaches, slow but somewhat steady action at both. It's been a while since I've fished the Artic Silver line, being able to throw a long way out is kind of fun. Distance isn't everything but does come in handy at times like this morning. I was able to hook a cutty that boiled way out there that would have been harder to reach with the OBS. Both cutts and rezzies were around but nothing terrible big.
Now at home smoking meats, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Hit the beach at 7:00 this morning and called it a day at 12:00.
Decent water movement for the first hour. Far from hot fishing with four fish to hand and another three or so self released. Nothing of any size and only saw two jumpers all morning.
Today was the first day this fall that I felt just a tinge of the winter cutthroat doldrums that come every year.
The fog this morning was to the bone chilly.
The only two pics I took today.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

I like it when Nick doubts me. I told him that the chums were coming up out of the school to hit my fly and he seemed skeptical at best. It didn’t help that the first chum I landed was hooked in the Pectoral area.

They seemed to be hot for a bit and then shut back off again. It always helped to be casting over 30 or so fish at a time to find the “players” 😁

Fun day for sure.9C707CFD-573A-40F4-B478-693B2564EA7D.jpeg98482429-D721-4C5C-815B-6CF492AE607C.jpegE8E2FA79-3C89-41E9-A1D6-A146FD1172BE.jpeg50503E46-D49A-4092-A18A-CB70ED2DCC68.jpeg

You take that imx pro out?

No…I drank a beer and enjoyed the sunset and the smell of some good ganja.
Being downwind helps with the latter. ;)

It was wet. It was definitely a stay inside or don your waders and wading jacket just to leave the house.

Looks like a fun time.

Impressive canines on that Dog!

Hit the beach this morning for a few hours.
Pretty slow overall with some opportunities and the wind didn’t help.
Lots of ducks getting blasted.

Got my license and barbs checked by WDFW, which hasn’t happened in I can’t remember how many years. Good to see them out and about.

Upside down jellyfish is kind of freaky looking. Did you get checked where we fished last time?
