NFR Am I the only grump who doesn't care about Halloween?

Herself and I enjoy Halloween. Both over 70 we don't dress in costume, but do put some decorations on the porch. Our pleasure is seeing the joy in kids' faces, especially the 3-feet-and-under crowd, as they receive their goodies. It also warms us to see the escorting parents spending time with their littles, despite the usually nasty weather. Both of us worked with hard-core “troubled” boys at one time or another; repeat pre-teen and early teen arsonists, rapists, and murderers. Their mommies and daddies didn't spend time with their kids.

I wish I would have taken the time to snap a few photos in Forks this evening. People everywhere on the sidewalk in the main pat of the town on 101 all in costumes, full families even. Petty sure I saw my neighbor and her husband dressed as robots on the street giving out candy. I was headed into town to grab a new saw blade from Thriftway and wasn't expecting half of Forks to be turned out for Halloween. Kind of surreal, almost like vampire days but all the monsters, anime characters and everything in between.
How often is the weather this nice on Halloween here, or in Forks especially? I don’t know, but it seems not often. It was as busy around my place in West Seattle as I recall in the 10 years we’ve been in this house. I was out with the kids for all of it and it was really pretty fun! They had enough and asked to go home!

Since I went to college out of state, did not really live close to my parents after college, and hate traveling on Thanksgiving, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I had Thanksgiving with my immediate family. The last one was 4 years ago in Florida and unfortunately it was a sad day as my dad passed away in the early morning hours. Because he was in hospice and we were not sure how long he was going to live, we did not do any Thanksgiving preparations, food-wise. So after we re-grouped we joined the masses and managed to pick up a couple of rotisserie chickens and some fixings. It turned out all right despite the cirumstances.

Some years I spend it with friends and some years I stay home. With the latter, I don't mind, which some people don't understand. I can watch all the football I want or not want to, and eat whatever I want. I have cooked the traditional turkey and I have had swordfish.

With retirement looming, maybe will try and spend some holidays with my sister and her husband as I am on no schedule and an avoid the big crowds at the airport or take my time on the highways and do some site seeing along the way.
I think what i don’t like about holidays the most is that sometimes you feel like you should do something to get together with family , but it’s not always that easy to make that happen or you simply don’t want to. Or maybe family isn’t always that fun to be around. I think a lot of holidays make people feel guilty or lonely like they are supposed to be doing something . I think we need fewer holidays!

I guess I look at hoalloween different than most because todays my birthday. As kids there were always Halloween birthday parties, then as a teen and beyond always drunken craziness. When our kids were young we did it up big. The kids live in a newer neighbor with lots of young families and so many do neat stuff, so we go over there and trick or treat, it's about the fun the kids have. SixO today by belly button years.
Here's to many happy returns of the day!

Yup, if you can't find the fun in Halloween you are a grump. You don't have to partake, but if seeing other people having fun being goofy doesn't give you a smile you are a grump.

This.

We had a party last night and our 17 yr old invited his buddies over, they all got dressed up, and handed out candy. While maybe a bit sad knowing this could be our last Halloween with kids in the house, it was a ton of fun.

Running out of time with our one and only, now 15. Opted out of carving last night, instead, per her request, we watched a horror movie for the second night in a row. No door visitors in the country.
At 15 I was throwing eggs at cop cars.
Jeez...what a punk.

I dunno, hearing everyone talk about Halloween, I definitely think I'd be more into the whole thing as a "community celebration" if I was in a neighborhood that celebrated it. But we don't get many trick or treaters, mostly just the neighbors and their kids before they head off elsewhere. And nobody really does anything special.

Cool to hear that others like the holiday so much though.

Found an absolute gem of a neighborhood last night, like 30% of the houses were decorated better then any commercial Halloween event. The place was a pinterest wet dream, one house actually built a haunted house in their garage that wrapped through their whole lower level and out the front door. Lots of parents and kids out trick or treating despite the rain. Everyone having a good time. Kinda felt like 2018!

Being a Monday/school night we didn't get as many kids as usual. The first wee ones came at 5:15 and the last were at 7:45 which was perfect for my wife as 'her show',The Voice, came on at 8.
I'll have to watch my waistline as we have alot of candy left. :ROFLMAO:

Wife and teenage son decided to pass out candy. It was the usual stops every 5mins or so until they ran out of candy around 7pm. We shut off all lights visible from outside - porch, driveway, kitchen, etc. It was a completely dark house that may as well have been nobody home or sleeping. We had TWO instances of someone coming up and ringing our doorbell over and over and over until we told them to go away. Do people not know the "rules" of trick or treating anymore?

You give those kids a toothbrush, or a box of raisins.

For me Halloween especially is for my wife and kids. I am enthusiastically supportive. However, halloween is just a stepping stone to a much looked forward to hot plate of food in november and then xmas is a time when I myself go nuts. I enjoy stunning my family on christmas morning.

The lights off is a universal rule I thought everyone knew. There was one house last night that just taped a note to their door that said they were out of candy. But they left all the lights on, including orange and purple themed blinking lights around the door, and lit up pumpkins. So we send a 4 and 6 year old up to the door, they arnt going to read a note! Finally walked up after they waited a while and saw the note
