We Got These Shad Comin' In

They are fun to catch. I tried to pickle some once, and they turned out horrible. I should give it another try.

So THAT'S how you fish with glass!

I think a spey day clave at the john day damn might be in order. Bring your gear that you are willing to share and maybe catch a random fish too.
that would be a great place for it. they tend to show up there mid June typically I think.

Shad are open-water mass spawners; they don’t lay eggs in gravel. Shad filets are excellent eating and shad roe is considered a delicacy back east where there is still a commercial fishery in some places (e.g., the Potomac).

Tried some for the first time last year, fresh shad fillets were similar in flavor to small mouth bass, but 10X the work! Lots of fun to catch but the smell stays with you the whole way home and then some…

They are excellent smoked, which is the only way I have had them. I was humpy fishing on the Snohomish in September some years back when my friend caught a shad about 4-5 inches long. I don't know if it was an out bound young American shad or a different species.
