Ides of September

My goodness, we’re a month away from grouse season already. Truth be told, I can’t wait, but I will. Last year under the guise of reclamation Mt. Hull was deforested in a timber sale. The area has been my go to for two decades for Ruff’s and Blues. Our ranch sits on the north flank of the mount and I have access by private roads. Forest service and old logging roads have been destroyed in the area by dozers. Coverts lay bare now. What FS roads still exist will give me access to see if any birds remain. I’m planning on scouting before the opening.
if not I’ll be looking towards old and new options. For years before we bought and built at the ranch I used to hunt the areas south of Wauconda off Hwy 20. I know the areas well but it’s a drive from the ranch, not like taking the quad up the hill. Then I’ve heard of areas in the Sinlahekin Valley that hold birds but again a drive from the house. I’ve been spoiled hunting Hull so close by. But if I’m gonna eat grouse, I’ve gotta go find them…

That’s a bummer. Maybe they taste better if they are harder to find.

As the crow flies, the property I’m buying is due west on the Smilkameen from Mt Hull. Not sure where to find grouse in this area, but I know where some turkeys are😬

Hey Bob, are you looking into just land or is there a house on property?

Hey Roper, sorry to hear about the loss of grouse habitat at your go to. Grouse hunting is one of my favorite things to do. I hope your still able to find some birds at your spot and wish you the best of luck!

It is land with a shop on it and some outbuildings I’m hoping to build a home on it in the next 5 years. My family and I are pretty pumped about this!

Welcome to the area!
Thank you! I’ve been going out there for 30 years, now I’m exited to have a place. I was going to do the High buck hunt in September but I think I’ll be clearing brush and trees. If I do make it out for a hunt I’ll let you know if I see any grouse in the Pasayten. Its kind of a drive from your spot!

nice, Washington doesn’t open until the 15th. Where are you hunting?
Hunting in Southwest Montana. Season opens on Sept 1st.
I focus on mountain grouse in September. Hotter than snot this weekend so I try to get in some early morning hunts with the dog and work higher ridges taking advantage of shade, when possible. Got blanked today.
October I shift gears to prairie for Sharptail/Huns , by then the snake issue has calmed down.
Fall is busy with a variety of hunting/fishing so its mostly about balance, a bit of everything. Good to get out though, last Fall I had a single focus on my ram tag.

Handsome GSP, he‘s got a little gray coming in his muzzle, how old? In your last pic it looks like you have a Beretta, yes?
