So elected officials are never allowed to take vacations, did he leave before the floods or during the floods, was he reachable while on vacation in Italy.
They guy definitely seems to be a clown, since he assaulted a reporter then pleaded guilty after being elected as governor.
One can take a vacation, but when duty calls it time to get after it. He should have been on his way home promptly.

Having traveled from Southern Europe to the Western U.S. in my USAF and consulting careers multiple times, it is definitely not like Hollywood where it only takes a 60 second commercial to travel half way around the world. We were just understanding the magnitude of the flood here in Bozeman around noon on Monday which would have been evening in Italy. Gianforte who is a savvy businessman and knew he had a competent cabinet back in Helena, probably spent Tuesday insuring his Lt. Gov had all the authorities and directions necessary to get things under control and recovery started while he arranged travel back to MT. Whether leaving from Florence, IT or Rome on Wednesday, the earliest he could have been back in Helena or Bozeman would have been late afternoon (Bozeman) or late evening (Helena) on Thursday.
The haters in the liberal press will take every opportunity to trash the opposition and the truth be damned. One article even led with the following:

Either the author doesn’t know there are seven days in a week, or that Thursday is just two days removed from Monday or it was deliberately written to sensationalize the situation. Since Gianforte returned on Thursday and the flooding was still making its way down the Yellowstone into Eastern MT, the statement is patent false. Facts and truth be damned for the haters.

The "haters" in the "conservative" media do the exact same thing, remember all the shit a certain president got for playing golf, then silence for the next guy (who spent far more time on the golf course, and bilked taxpayers while doing it)...?

Hardly a deflection, just the truth... perhaps that hurts. I have no dog in this fight. I have no idea whether the Montana Governor could have or should have got back sooner. You're the one who brought up the "haters", all I ask is for a little intellectual consistency, if you're going to hammer one side for something that both do, acknowledge it. Haters on both sides and it helps no one.

Deflection and "whataboutism" are used by partisans on all sides. And it discredits all sides. However, I hope you can see how you kind of asked for it by leading your remark with "The haters in the liberal press will take every opportunity . . ." since everyone who is both literate, analytical, and objective is aware that both liberal and conservative media practice this routinely. Personally I think Gianforte is a prick based on his assault of a journalist while campaigning. I have no idea whether Gianforte's cabinet is competent or if they're all assholes like him. Nonetheless, MT does have a Lieutenant Governor who apparently did immediately seek a federal disaster declaration, which is really more to the point than how many days it took the Governor to return to Helena.Great deflection

spent a decade working projects in Europe..more than once got a call requiring me to get back to HQ pronto and was always on the next plane out, never not back within 24 hours.

I agree and should have said that in my post asking questions, I hate the current Right as much as the left. This is about helping the citizens of Montana, I've seen pics of repairs already going on on some bridges!
Maybe three days - and that's if you don't count Monday or Thursday. Math is important! Since there was nothing for the guv to sign, and getting him on a repair crew would just slow them down, I'd say keep on keeping on in Italy. Fucking shit will still be there whenever he gets back.
