Never skip leg day

Also durning Covid I quit the gym. I would lift and play racquetball. I purchased a rowing machine and started using it 5 days a week. Figured it would serve two purposes, exercise and improved skills on the river. Also got a split board and started some back country work.

Ugh. Fuck you, buddy.

My mile time is like double that. I'm not much of a runner.
Yeah, my little brother was the state champion cross country runner his senior year of high school, then went on to be the #1 collegiate cross country runner. I kind of gave up on running after my sophomore year, and was actually his equal if not a bit faster before I stopped caring. Didn't start up again until I was in my late 20s. I'm just happy I can still move at that level at my size and age (200lb, pushin 40).

I've got a Strava/Zwift trainer that I put winter miles on. I recently bought a set of fancy adjustable dumbells like @Herkileez has, but haven't done much with them because I jacked up my shoulder snowboarding and have been lazy about doing my PT for it. Open to hearing any good dumbell workouts though. I suspect I'll need to find a basic weight bench to get the most out of them though.
In 2010 a fitness coach sponsored by my employer set me up with 2 good (adjustable) dumbbell routines for overall fitness-flexibility-stamina (as opposed to strength-bulk) working different muscle groups each day. The routines have 3 - 5 exercises. Each dumbbell exercise has 60 reps, increasing weight/decreasing reps then decreasing weight/increasing reps over six sets. Bodyweight or fixed weight exercises get 90 reps over six sets. I rotate the routines every 30 days or so. That's followed up with either 20 minutes of intense or 40 minutes of moderate cardio.
The orthopedic surgeon who did my hip replacement in 2013 that fixed a birth defect told me to avoid running for cardio (and use trekking poles for hiking) so I do "low impact (shock)" cardio; intervals on a cardio machine with a XC ski type movement, intense cycling, or brisk walking. In 2019 I did a review-tune-up with a YMCA fitness coach who liked what I was doing but gave me a couple of tweaks for both better muscle group balance and effort.

Over the last few years I have occasionally had (old-guy) shoulder pain (doesn't seem to affect casting) that has apparently been caused by facia-muscle adhesions in my back and possibly chest causing pinched muscles and nerves down my arm(s). Deep tissue massage helps a lot along with drinking 1/2 my body weight in oz of water daily. During my annual physical this year I'll ask my PCP to rule out a tear.
This dumbbell exercise also helps a lot.

Here's my brother's college bests. Does make me kinda wish I had actually pursued it. I put no real effort in to it and didn't care when I was in high school, thus stopping after sophomore year.

Right about where I was. I think 4:48 was my best 1500, 2:03 in the 800, cross country I was in the 17:30 range. That was 20 years ago, I can't run across a parking lot now.

haha. you'd be surprised how fast you'd probably bounce back if you tried. Those are crazy good times.

My exercise room also happens to be my flyfishing gear storage room, and my exercise equipment is a wonderful place to keep all of my FF apparel hanging and ready to go so I don't forget any of it.

Anywhere from 18-22min, depending on how hard I've been working on it.

My 1mi time can be anywhere from 5:10-6:30. When I was in high school and weighed 60lb less than I do now, I hit 4:40 once.
Quoted wrong one, that's right about where I was, no where near your brother. I think my running(hard) days are over. Already had open heart surgery once, and my left ventricle is enlarging again slightly so I'm probably looking at an artificial valve here in the next 5-10 years.

Whoa. My 8 minute mile tells me I probably wouldn't be fun to run with.

That's awesome.

You could lap me now.
I have pushup bars, a pull up bar on chains, and one of those ab wheels, gathered together, that's the basis of my fitness setup. Also live in the hills so I was thinking shorter intervals running up hill 100 yards, then jog back down 10x a few times a week till I can get some cardio back. The problems is finding time to start. I haven't done any meaningful exercise routine in years.

I literally have never used a single piece of gym equipment, been in a gym, or worked out. That is dead honest and true. In fact I proposed such a thing to my lady and she looked disgusted and said ,"why would you do that when there's wood to split and hay to stack etc?" I do plenty of that and am insanely active which is likely why I'm not a fatty. In short, I'm not allowed to work out.

And pls disregard the couch as it is soon on its way out. Not sure if we will replace with another or turn this space into a mixed martial arts studio where I can beat up the kids.
HA., I WAS going to mention the couch! Very un-Swimmy-ish.

I’ve mentioned this before, after 41 years I had to finally quit running last September. I never loved running like some people do but i didn’t realize how much i would miss it anyway. So i started a new routine.

I no longer have to see my physical therapist but I continue to maintain the PT daily exercises and keeping a daily journal of it keeps me on track. (I really hate when i have to write “Day Off”.) So i use my old running rule to never ever miss more than two days in a row of exercise.

I now walk more days a week than i used to run and my walk is always between 45-90 minutes. I am back to using free weights three times a week, but i had to switch from 8 lbs to 5 lbs. (Sometimes you have to do the exercises you know you will stick with, (which is why i quit doing planks!). I also added core work which is key to my back issues.

Watching my mom sit around all day and walking with a cane and moving slow has been the best incentive! For me this is not just about wanting to be healthy and keeping weight off, it’s most about me getting older and being as mobile as i can be. And also my mental health.

I received my Medicare card in the mail yesterday. That was fairly depressing too like having to give up running.

If you want a new challenge, this is a VERY good substitute. I don't mean just any bike. This specific one. They're crazy.

There's also this one... if you like the feeling of riding uphill in sand. They're both instruments of torture, but this one is another level of hell.

I’ve always had more of an aversion to working out on a machine and preferred to be outside running. Also problem with a bike, or any kind of machine is we have no room in our small condo or a good place to workout. We do have both cars in the garage but it because my husband has his drums set up there since that is where he practices.

Too bad about your achilles and the half marathon. But wow, running that distance in July has to be challenging!

Yeah, having places to put things is definitely a huge challenge. We have a 3br house with a 2 car garage, and I gave up on my dream of having a home gym after a year. Set up a full barbell gym in the garage... but ended up just taking up too much space. I enjoy going to the gym though, so it wasn't too soul crushing.

I’m old and can’t run anymore, but working from home has allowed me to walk quite a bit especially the last three years.
I try to get in three five mile walks per work week, generally walking M, W and F.
I’m on about the same pace this year as last.
I’ve found walking to be a good balance between exercise and my beer intake. ;)
