With the local lakes too hot for the trout, I’ve been turned into a crazed pan fish fisherman. Went to an east Pierce County lake today and had a great time. A lot of nice sized crappie with many bluegills and perch in the mix. I’ve decided to get myself a dedicated pan fish rod, just a little 8 foot four weight. What’s fun, is the action, they all hit pretty hard and it makes for an enjoyable afternoon. Interestingly, if I wanted crappie, I’d put on a black mini leach. If I wanted bluegill I put on the bluegill bully fly. They really didn’t care for the undesignated fly and would just hit the one specified for them. Usually, they’ll all eat pretty much anything you feed them but today they were choosy for their own specific fly. Get out there for a tug, or 40…

Love me some panfish on the fly. Genuinely one of my favorite ways to fish.

Thread 'Lookin' for the Warmwater Slam... (Confluence Fly Shop contest)'

Confluence Fly Shop is running a fun low-key contest this month to encourage folks to leave trout alone in the warmest and driest part of the summer and instead, focus on the species that thrive in mudbog bathtub waters. Rules are simple, catch three warmwater species on the fly in one day and you get an entry into a drawing for some prizes. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, crappie, catfish, carp and whatever else you can dredge out of your local drainage pond.

Because I enjoy silly things like this, I gave it a shot the other morning and found...

Sounds like a lot of fun and something I've not done for several years (caprs getting in the way) but you've peaked my interest. Aren't you going to build your dedicated pan fish rod?

I’ve got my eye on a s-glass blank and parts from an E-bay vendor. Wanting to go “on the cheap” for this one. I can’t decide and keep going back and forth if it should be a 4# or 3#.
