Lake Mead, the Nation’s Largest Reservoir, Is Smaller Than Ever

Water levels in the reservoir, which sits behind the Hoover Dam, are at record lows. A continued drop would imperil water supplies for millions of people and cut electricity from the dam.

I remember renting a boat and taking my family out on Lake Mead to view the dam and the surrounding lake about 14 years ago…it was about 60 feet higher then.

To the extent that climate change is 1) occurring, 2) accelerating, and 3) going to exacerbate SW US drought and heat conditions rather than solve them, we’ll probably see a pretty epic migration outta there in the coming decades.

Near-term it’ll be interesting to watch this fall/winter El Niño’s effects on SW reservoirs. Could be some very substantial rainfall events in store for that part of the world if typical EN conditions hold, which may provide a bump in levels.

Best hope is this winter's forecasted above normal precip for that area.
Without it, they're screwed it looks like.

Probably they'll just keep fighting over who gets the last drop, just like fighting over who gets the last fish.
