One year, I was able to catch three raccoons at the pond while the arrowleaf balsamroot was in full bloom,

I appreciate the low-pro correction on the plant ID, thank you. Without blooms it was hard to tell from the pic and I assumed the area is wetter overall than it must be.

Personally, I've had better results with the Victor scissor-type traps you bury, but they are a pain in the butt to set and bury. I have three of these Gopher Hawk traps, and when I see mole hills appear, I can set all three in less than 5 minutes. Poke a hole, set the trap, insert it into the hole you poked, and go inside and have a beer. Simple.

I don't want to turn this into a "How to Eliminate Backyard Wildlife" thread. Back to the cooler praying mantis posts.

You're probably tired of this, but it the mantis just has us fascinated. A green lacewing landed on the screen this morning, and the mantis captured it so fast I missed the action. Just looked over to grab my phone and it was having breakfast already.

We see one every year or so on our front porch here in Tumwater. They seem to like our porch light. We always find them hanging out by the door after dark or in the morning.

They seem pretty hungover after a hard night of partying. They will actually hiss at you if handled.
