Caprs in the net

This morning I looked outside, none of the trees were moving. Huh? Calm! Hitched up the pram and headed out to the lake.

I started out fishing a hybrid and spooked every fish I cast to so I changed to a small jig under an indicator; had one or two fish look at the fly but not commit. Trouser worm. Standing on the seat in my pram I spotted a fish mudding and somehow made the perfect cast. No hesitation in the eat, the trouser worm is long gone, I broke the fish off. Suspect surgeon's knot. I'm down two trouser worms this week - need to tie up a couple and check my knots. And tippet. (I replaced the 0X flouro tippet with 10# mono - no more "leader" issues, but........)

I found a lot of fish feeding on a flat, there was just a slight breeze so I let the breeze move me up the lake taking shots at fish. Trouser worm:

Dropped the anchor and changed flies and added an Oros indicator and pitched it out so I could eat some lunch and hydrate. Nothing happened to the indicator bug.

The fish seemed to lose interest in the trouser worm; I saw several obvious rejections so I went back to the hybrid. Saw a big fish slowly nosing along bottom and put the hybrid a couple feed in front and twitched it. The eat was obvious, I hooked the fish - it took off for the inlet stream and then was gone. WTH?



The hook broke. I thought I'd gotten rid of all these suspect jig hooks but missed this one. I've gone through my two carp boxes again and think these jig hook ties are all tossed. I have started using two different Owner hooks, both size 2. One is the No Escape Hook (4306-091) and the other is their SSW Straight Eye (5180-091). I'm sure these hooks won't break.

I finished up the day catching one more carp, three into the net. The wind picked up, called it a day. Another CAPR CAPER.

EDIT, EDIT: I don't know what @Billy uses but Buzzy (Pat Burdick) uses a 240 204 caliber rifle casing that is sharpened on the inside and outside edges., (thanks @Jim F.) I push hard on 2 mm closed cell foam, and twist the cartridge to make 240 caliber foam circles. I pierce the center of the foam circle with a needle threaded with 30# Tuffline. I string two small glass beads on the Tuffline to serve as a "stop" on the end of foam "tail". I do paint a little super glue onto the Tuffline just before I pull it tight with the beads butting up against the last foam circle.







I have no doubt that clever tyers can figure a simpler way to tie this sometimes effective fly.
