Your Single Fly

I fished the Green R quite a few years ago and the one and only winner for me and the guys who guided me on it used an ant pattern, but they are sooooooo picky it has to be the right ant pattern. I used mine and they used theirs and kicked my butt. I got a few but they 4-1 outfished me with their ants

The green thing.
Back in the day a few buddies of mine all took our dads to dry falls. One dad in particular was catching a lot of fish....some guy in a pimped out pontoon boat was trolling by the dad catching a lot of fish and asked, "what are you using?". His response, "some little green thing" 🤣

It was an olive Willy. I could hear him from across the lake, and I still crack up to this day when I hear someone describe a fly as a green thing.

One fly’s are a blast. My club does one, mi-late april, 9am-noon, then hotdogs, chit-chat and the award, most fish wins. All on the honor system. Chironomids win usually, my damsels or leeches have not produced numbers at that time of year. Or they’ve broken off. Or some other fu$&kuppery has occurred causing me to lose. No prizes are awarded, it’s just a good time.

It depends on the lake and especially the time of year you asked me this question. In the spring I'd answer a size 16 black and silver cron with a nickel bead head.

The rest of the time a small beadhead olive leech.

This is years ago but I remember an article on one fly contests and some people had fly strategies that involved having a pattern from which they could clip materials off during the day of the competition to best work with the existing conditions.

Modifying the pattern on the fly, so to speak.

Did a one fly years ago on the Truckee River thru the Orvis shop. The guys who won, and took 2nd, were using posse buggers….. I took 3rd with a tungsten PT jig.

Had to climb a tree and use a stick to get my fly back at one point!

I’m not much of a fan of “competitive” fly fishing, other than competing with myself to solve the days puzzle. That said, the one fly deal is fun, and I’d do it again
