NOTICE OF SCAM

A good friend was scammed out of $900 a couple of days ago. I consider him to be very intelligent with above average computer skills.

He posted something for sale on Nextdoor (red flag) and was contacted about it. Was supposedly sent money on Venmo, then was contacted by 'Venmo' to tell him the money was there but he couldn't see it yet due to technical difficulties. Then the scammer had to resend it due to 'bank issues' and wanted a refund for the difference.

While it seems like something none of us would fall for, these scammers are very good and he did. His bank and credit card company have assured him he will be credited for the losses, but still is left feeling violated.

I now have a piece of blue tape below my monitor with the words 'Don't be an idiot' written on it.

I had someone reach out to me about a pack I was looking for, telling me I could contact their friend. I reported it and moved on. They're out there.

Yup always ask us mods first if you are contacted by someone like this. We'll look into it for you.

I'm working on some additional safeguards to try and stay ahead of things.
 
Over the weekend, I got one like Phil described. Alexisomething or other from Florida. He joined up like 10 minutes before contacting me...telling me (with incorrect grammar) to email a friend of his. Nope.
 
Here's how it works in the Scene:

Damn! I wish I knew this before I sent my savings to help secure the fortune owed to Prince Adeolu of Nigeria. From that deal, I'm not expecting anything near the BIG SUMS you're mentioning. Oh well, lesson learned for next time - don't jump into a promising investment without first checking in with a BIG NAME like Travers.
