The 5-Year Clock: Your 5-year period of competition starts upon initial full-time enrollment at any collegiate institution (including a junior college) or at the start of the academic year immediately following your 19th birthday, whichever comes first.

Well that has always been the case until Pavia (Vanderbilt QB) went to court and got a fifth full year. 2 at JC and 3 years at 4 year school playing all 5 years full time He won on the grounds of some antitrust laws. Not sure if it was ever straightened out or not. I just know back in the day you had 5 years to get 4 playing years in. The first three games were freebies but if you played one snap in the 4th game or any game after that in that season that counted as one full year of participation. Transfering was an automatic 1 year out and counted as one of the 5 years.
