Taking Strangers Fishing, Yay or Nay?

I've met up with a few people from here(well, the old board) and a bunch from the old Drake board. Mostly had good times and I've been friends with some of them for 20ish years now.

That said, I've had enough poor experiences that I will meet up with somebody a couple times before committing to spend an entire day in a boat with them.
Yeah, I think that spending an entire day with someone in a boat is a bit of a commitment. I would probably revise my "I'll fish with just about anyone once" if it was limited to my boat, which I don't have....

You're welcome on my boat anytime. And after the Swap & Shop, we won't be "strangers".
I mean shit, you're a Donkey fan, you can't be THAT bad.....

looking forward to the Swap/Shop.

are you going?
Not sure yet, work is really busy and so have to see.
I'd like to, 0and if I do it'll be a one day, fun day, Saturday deal.

Try guiding folks with more money than good sense who are staying at a ritzy all inclusive resort on a private island in the Florida Keys. I could tell some stories. "I want to catch some of those permit fish." "Have you ever cast a fly rod before?" "Well no but I watched some videos and it doesn't look that hard."

I haven't done the invite strangers much, but they weren't total strangers when we both had been posting on a fishing forum. Worked out OK, but not everyone wants to fish the way I do. I was invited to float and fish with a total stranger on the Wenatchee River some years ago. Kinda' surprised me, but he said he had seen me fishing the run near where we met. His fishing partner had to return home while he still had a couple days left to fish. I said, "Sure," assuming he knew how to row his raft and so forth.

He was surprised that I was set up with only a floating line, while he was geared up the way I would for winter fishing. I said, "It's your boat, so your rules, but the way I fish floating lines go ahead of sinking lines." He was OK with that. I had years of experience on that river, and he had a few days. So I felt that I had something to offer. Seemed like we hit if off pretty well, but we never contacted one another after that trip. I recall that he had some serious work and family business waiting when he returned home. I hope it all worked out.

I got an invite to go with a guy who knew the water on a river up north. Guy had a boat, so I figured this was a good deal. We hit the river, motored up to a run, and proceeded to get ready to fish the run I said go first and I'll follow you.
Well he cast and was running down the river like an Olympic sprinter before I was even into my third swing.... like lightening he was done. He later told me I was the slowest fisherman he'd ever fished with.
:ROFLMAO:

I fished with @Salmo_g several times after that, and picked up my pace.
;)

Filling tuna seats can be hard for this very reason..

People you know always say "just let me know and I'm you're guy!" but reality sets in when you get the notice two days in advance for a lot of guys and they have to back out.

I've actually not taken a stranger on the ocean quite yet but I came close to trying a couple times.

I’m not anti-social by any means but also not the type to post an open seat on my boat on the internet. Even here, though I am sure 95% of the folks on this site would be great fishing partners. I’ve definitely extended offers to many folks here that I’ve interacted with or gotten to know on our local beaches over the years. That said, I am also cool fishing solo so don’t seek new fishing partners out proactively. If someone shows an interest that I have some familiarity with, I’m almost always happy to oblige and take them along.

In the end, I guess I never post open seats here because if a “freshly spawned” took me up on my offer, I’d probably be too polite to say no and might end up in some of the horror shows you all have posted here….

Here's the funny thing, out of the handful pf people I fish with on the regular, I have exactly one person who I knew outside of a forum. A lot of Westfly folks and a lot from here comprise the rest. But, I also actually really enjoy fishing by myself....like I did today...and probably will again tomorrow.

I'm weird in that I get a lot more enjoyment out of taking people with me and sharing what I do. I'll do SOME solo trips, but not many. Mostly during salmon season - I'll do my quick after-work sessions on the Columbia near me... which tend to be my most successful trips by a long shot. My solo trips, I tend to be done in less than an hour and heading back in.

I have met and become great friends with a few guys that I met via chat board back in my bass fishing days. I don’t think I would have ever offered to take a stranger but bass fishing is something that requires a boat so not many guys need a ride.

I would likely fish with most of you jokers. If it turned out you suck I would just walk until you got tired and stopped following me😂

I tried that with @Pink Nighty but it didn’t work. I’d cover a bunch of ground, look back and there he was, coming around the corner. So then I tried crossing the river, but he made it across, too. But only the first time.

😁😁😁
